College of Charleston Swings Its Way to 3-0 Win Over the Tigers

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston recorded 40 kills en route to a 3-0 win over the Towson University volleyball team on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Sophomore Silvia Grassini tied for the team lead with seven kills while hitting .385 for the Tigers (16-3, 2-3 CAA).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • College of Charleston (15-4, 4-1 CAA) quickly opened up a 9-3 lead in the first set on a kill from Krissy Mummey.
  • A kill from sophomore Silvia Grassini followed by a block from Grassini and juniors Carola Biver and Jocelyn Kuilan pulled the Tigers to within three, 11-8.
  • The Cougars took an 18-12 lead on an error by the Tigers and head coach Don Metil called timeout.
  • Coming out of the break, Towson scored four of the next five points and made it 19-16 in the set as College of Charleston was forced to call timeout. Biver had a pair of kills during that stretch.
  • A service ace from Grassini and a kill from sophomore Annie Ertz pulled the Tigers to within one, 22-21.
  • Following the Cougars' second timeout, the home team scored three straight points and took the first set, 25-21.
  • College of Charleston opened up a 7-2 lead in the second set on back-to-back attack errors by the Tigers.
  • A kill from Devon Rachel gave the Cougars a 14-8 advantage in the stanza.
  • Mummey gave the home team a 22-12 lead with her kill.
  • College of Charleston took a 2-0 lead in the match with a service ace which closed out a 25-13 set win.
  • The Cougars took a 6-4 lead in the third set before the Tigers scored four of the next seven points and pulled to within one, 9-8. Redshirt junior Anna Holehouse's service ace highlighted that stretch for the Tigers.
  • The College of Charleston used a 7-2 run to open up a 16-10 lead in the set.
  • The two teams continued to battle before a kill from Mummey secured a 25-17 set win and victory in the match for the Cougars. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The College of Charleston recorded 40 kills and hit .245 in the match while holding the Tigers to 28 kills and an .045 hitting percentage.
  • Both teams recorded four service aces while the Cougars finished with nine team blocks to the Tigers' five.
  • Grassini led the Tigers with seven kills, two blocks and a .385 hitting percentage while Kuilan also finished with seven kills.
  • Sophomore Marrisa Wonders, returned to the line-up after missing two matches due to injury, and recorded 14 assists and seven digs.
  • Holehouse finished with 14 kills and moved into sole possession of third place on the career digs list at Towson with 1,415 career digs.
  • Mummey led the Cougars with 14 kills while Allison Beckman had 31 assists and 11 digs.
 
The Tigers are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 8 as they travel to UNCW for a 1 p.m. match.
