Towson Looking To Extend Win Streak As St. Mary's (Md.) Visits

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's basketball team is making a brief pit stop to host St. Mary's College of Maryland in between its two longest road trips of the season.

A Look At St. Mary's, Md.
The Seahawks have been a perennial Division III powerhouse. They have lost three straight games after a season-opening 80-75 victory over Gallaudet. In its last game, St. Mary's dropped a 92-73 decision to Penn State-Altoona. Ochae Bynum and Spencer Schultz combined for 40 points. St. Mary's shot 42.4% from the field for the game, including 45.5% from downtown. Members of the Capital Athletic Conference, St. Mary's have made five appearances in the Division III tournament, including a pair of Elite 8 appearances under head coach Chris Haney. The Seahawks top three scorers have been Schultz (16.3 points per game), Bynum (15.5) and Matt Ayoub (15.0).

In winning three games last week in Florida, Towson had four players average double figures: Zane Martin & Mike Morsell (14.0 points per game), Eddie Keith II (11.3), and Brian Starr (10.0). Morman averaged 8.0 points per outing, but his defensive energy keyed the Tigers surge against Penn. Justin Gorham (5.7 rebounds per game) and Alex Thomas (5.0) were demons on the glass for the Tigers. Thomas also had four of Towson's 10 blocked shots. Jordan McNeil and Dennis Tunstall also averaged double digit minutes last week and made significant contributions. Towson averaged 7.3 made 3-pointers per game.
 
On The Run
In each of its last five games, Towson has led by double digits at some point largely due in part to some impressive first half runs. Against Frostburg State, the Tigers grabbed control with a 12-2 run that broke a 12-12 tie. Towson used a 17-4 burst against Loyola to expand a 23-16 lead into a 40-20 bulge. Against FAU, the Tigers took immediate control with a 10-0 run to break a 2-2 tie. Towson trailed Penn, 19-9, before unleashing a 23-4 run that gave the Tigers the lead for good. Clinging to a 12-11 lead against Georgia Southern, Towson scored 12 consecutive points to open a 24-11 advantage.
 
Keeping It 100
Pat Skerry became the third head coach in program history to win 100 games. He accomplished the milestone after the Tigers defeated Penn, 79-71 on Nov. 21. The other two Towson coaches to win more than 100 games are Terry Truax and Vince Angotti.

Towson is in the midst of a busy two-week stretch of where its playing seven games over 15 days in two states and one country. Once the Tigers land on Dec. 3, they will have traveled over 8,800 miles and enjoyed lots of unique experiences.

So far, the Tigers have traveled 2,172 miles.
 
Up Next
Towson will travel to Belfast, Northern Ireland to compete in the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic. The Tigers will meet La Salle on Friday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Holy Cross will meet Manhattan at 11:30 a.m. The two losers meet Saturday, Dec. 2 at 9:30 a.m. in the consolation contest. The championship game is scheduled for noon tip-off. All four games will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network with Dave Ryan and former Xavier coach Pete Gillen on the call.
