HAMILTON, N.Y. – Down 2-0 the Towson University volleyball team staged a massive rally and earned a 3-2 comeback victory over Colgate University in the first round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) Thursday night. The Tigers (27-5) earned the first postseason win in program history and advanced to face Syracuse in the second round on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- With the first set tied at 3-3, Colgate (18-11) used a 6-3 run to take a 9-6 advantage. Alli Lowe had a kill and a block assist during that stretch.
- Towson scored four of the next six points and pulled to within one, 11-10. Junior Jocelyn Kuilan recorded a service ace during that run.
- The Raiders pushed their lead to 16-12 on a kill from Katie Stansbury.
- A kill from junior Carola Biver pulled the Tigers to within two, 17-15.
- Colgate used a 5-1 run to push its lead to 22-16.
- The two teams traded points before a Towson attack error gave the Raiders a 25-18 set win and the early lead in the match.
- Colgate opened the second set on a 6-0 run and pushed its lead to 9-2. Lowe had five kills during that stretch for the home team.
- An attack error by the Tigers gave the Raiders an 18-9 advantage in the stanza.
- The two teams continued to battle before a kill from Jessica Lathan allowed Colgate to take the second set 25-15 and the Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the match.
- Tied at 6-6 in the third set, Towson used a 5-2 run to take an 11-8 lead. The Tigers recorded four blocks during that stretch. Sophomore Silvia Grassini had three block assists to lead the Black and Gold efforts.
- Back-to-back kills from Taylor Flaherty pulled Colgate to within one, 14-13.
- Towson responded with a 3-0 run which gave the visitors a 17-13 edge in the set. Sophomore Olivia Finckel had a pair of kills during that stretch.
- A kill from Grassini pushed the Towson advantage to 21-17.
- A block from junior Olamide Sonuga closed out a 25-19 set win for the Tigers and sent the match to a fourth set.
- Towson trailed 10-8 in the fourth set before three straight bad sets by the Raiders gave the Black and Gold an 11-10 edge.
- The Tigers used a 5-0 run to take an 18-12 advantage. Senior Julymar Otero and Kuilan each had a kill and a block assist during that stretch.
- A kill from Sonuga extended the Towson lead to 20-15.
- A pair of kills from Finckel sealed a 25-21 set win for the Tigers and tied the match at 2-2.
- Colgate took a 4-2 lead in the fifth and decisive set on a kill from Stansbury.
- Towson used a 7-1 run to take a 9-5 lead as Colgate called timeout. Otero recorded a pair of kills during that stretch.
- A 5-1 run by the home team pulled the Raiders to within one, 11-10.
- A pair of Biver kills highlighted a 4-1 run by the Tigers to close out a 15-11 set win as Towson claimed victory in the match.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Towson was making its first postseason appearance since the 2004 team advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
- The Tigers improved to 4-0 this season when they are forced to play five sets. It was the second time this year they have rallied from a 2-0 deficit for the win.
- The win over Colgate gave Towson its 27th win of the season. That ties the 2014 Towson team for the most wins in a season under head coach Don Metil. The 27 wins are also tied for the third most in program history.
- Towson outblocked Colgate 12-10 in the match. Ten of the 12 blocks came in the third set or later as the Tigers staged their comeback. Seven Tigers recorded at least one block in the contest as Sonuga led the way with seven.
- Colgate hit .193 in the match while Towson hit .145. The Tigers are 20-0 this season when they hold opponents to a hitting percentage under .200.
- Biver posted a team-best 11 kills and added 13 digs for her ninth double-double of the season.
- Otero finished with 10 kills, 13 digs and six assists while sophomore Marrisa Wonders had 26 assists and 10 digs. For Otero it was her 13th double-double of the year while Wonders posted her 15th double-double of the season.
- Redshirt junior Anna Holehouse led the backline defensive efforts with 20 digs.
- Lowe led Colgate with 25 kills while Stansbury had 12 kills and 21 digs.
The Tigers will be back on the court on Friday, Dec. 1 when they take on Syracuse at 7 p.m. in the second round of the NIVC.
