Series History: Towson and Norfolk State are meeting for the second straight year and the sixth time overall. The Tigers hold a 5-0 advantage in the match-up after posting a 61-58 win last year in Towson.
Mary Cuevas led the Tigers with 10 rebounds and added eight points in that win while
Kiara Phillips had 15 points for Norfolk State.
I'm Honored: Towson senior forward
Mary Cuevas was honored as the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week on Monday. Cuevas was honored for the first time in her career after averaging 16 points, 12.5 rebounds and four blocks per game She contributed 18 points, eight rebounds and a career-high six blocks in the win over Saint Joseph's. Cuevas followed that performance up by posting her third double-double of the season with 14 points and a career-high 17 rebounds and two blocks in the win over Loyola. She is the first Tiger player to earn CAA Player of the Week accolades since November 28, 2016.
Welcome to the Block Party: Towson posted 19 blocks in the two games combined last week. Senior
Mary Cuevas led the way with eight blocks while sophomore forward
Nukiya Mayo contributed six rejections. Towson now has 54 blocks on the season and has recorded seven or more blocks in a game five times this year. The Tigers enter play this week averaging 6.8 blocks per game. Towson ranks sixth in the nation for blocks per game and 20th for total blocks. Cuevas leads Towson with 22 blocks and ranks 18th nationally for blocks per game (2.75 per game). Nine Tigers have recorded at least one block through the first eight games.
During the Win Streak: Towson enters Tuesday's game at Norfolk State riding a three-game win streak. Its the longest win streak for the Tigers since they won three straight games from Jan. 8-15 of last year. Over the course of the last three games, the Tigers are averaging 76.7 points per game while holding their opponents to just 58.3 points per game. Also during the streak, the Tigers have a +8.3 rebounding margin and have 31 steals to their opponents' 17 swipes. Redshirt senior guard
Raine Bankston is averaging a team-best 20 points per game during the streak while senior forward
Mary Cuevas (18.3 ppg, 11.7 rpg) and sophomore forward
Nukiya Mayo (10.3 ppg, 10.3 rpg) are both contributing a double-double.
I'll Take That: Towson recorded 12 steals in Saturday's win over Loyola. Junior guard
Danielle Durjan and sophomore guard
Etalyia Vogt tied for team lead with three steals each. The Tigers have now recorded double-digit steals in three of their last five games. Durjan has posted three or more steals in four games this season and Towson is a perfect 4-0 in those contests.
Balanced Attack: One of the keys to success for the Tigers this season has been demonstrating a balanced attack. Towson had three players scored in double figures in the win over Loyola and eight of the 10 players who appeared in that game scored at least two points. In the last five games, Towson has posted a 4-1 record while four players have averaged double-digit points during that stretch. Guards
Raine Bankston and
Danielle Durjan along with forwards
Mary Cuevas and
Nukiya Mayo are all averaging 11 or more points in the last five games. A fifth player, guard
Etalyia Vogt is close behind as she is contributing 9.8 points per game during that stretch.
Up Next: The Tigers will take time off for finals following Tuesday's game. The Tigers will be back in action on Dec. 21 when they face Arkansas Pine Bluff in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic.
