Cuevas' Big Day Not Enough as Tigers Fall to Radford

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Senior forward Mary Cuevas poured in a game-high 22 points but it was not enough as the Towson University women's basketball team fell to Radford, 69-66 in the final game of the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic Friday. Cuevas averaged 16.5 points per game in the two contests and was the Tigers' representative on the All-Tournament Team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson (5-6) opened the game on a 9-5 run as redshirt senior guard Raine Bankston drained a deep three-pointer with 7:17 to go in the period.
  • The Tigers pushed their lead to 14-7 as Cuevas sunk a basket and the accompanying foul shot with 4:07 showing on the clock.
  • Radford (6-4) used a 7-0 run to tie the game at 14-14 with 1:24 to go in the stanza. Destinee Walker led the Highlanders with four points during that stretch.
  • Towson scored six of the final 10 points in the first quarter and took a 20-18 lead after 10 minutes of play. Sophomore forward Nukiya Mayo and Cuevas each had three points during that run.
  • Radford opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run and Towson was forced to use a timeout as the Highlanders took a 26-20 lead with 7:52 to go in the stanza. Claudia Quevedo had a pair of three-pointers during that stretch.
  • The two teams traded baskets as a three-pointer from junior guard Danielle Durjan pulled the Tigers to within one, 28-27 with 4:18 left on the clock.
  • Radford pushed its lead back to five, 32-27 but the Tigers answered with another triple from Durjan. Durjan's shot from behind the arc cut the Towson deficit to two, 32-30 with 2:30 to go before the half.
  • The Highlanders got a late bucket from Quevedo and took a 34-30 lead at the break.
  • The two squads went back and forth to start the third quarter as Cuevas' lay-up at 7:47 made it a 38-36 game.
  • Radford used a 10-0 run to push its lead to 12, 48-36 with 4:33 to go in the period.
  • Towson scored four of the next five points and cut its deficit to nine, 49-40 with 3:23 to play in the stanza.
  • A pair of free throws from Jayda Worthy gave Radford its largest lead of the game, 53-40 with 2:39 left on the clock.
  • A 5-0 run by the Tigers pulled the Black and Gold to within eight, 53-45 with 29 seconds to go in the third. Sophomore guard Etalyia Vogt had a three-point play in that stretch.
  • Walker connected on a pair of free throws with five seconds to go which gave Radford a 55-45 lead with 10 minutes to play.
  • Towson leaned on its seniors in the fourth quarter as Bankston and Cuevas combined for 17 of the team's 21 points in the period.
  • The Tigers unable to close the gap however as Mayo's late tip-in made it a 69-66 final.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson shot 49.1 percent from the field but was just 10-for-17 from the foul line. Radford shot 39.7 percent from the field, hit five three-pointers and was 18-for-30 from the foul line.
  • The Tigers won the rebounding battle for the 11th time this season. Towson finished with 37 rebounds to the Highlanders' 35 boards.
  • Despite the loss, the Tigers lead the all-time series with Radford 7-3.
  • Cuevas had a solid day shooting the ball as she was 10-for-12 from the floor and added two free throws. She also tied for the team lead with nine rebounds.
  • Over the two day event, Cuevas averaged 16.5 points and eight rebounds per game.
  • Bankston contributed 18 points while Mayo added 15 points and tied Cuevas for the team lead with nine rebounds.
  • Quevedo led Radford with 15 points.

The Tigers are back in action when they open Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play by hosting Northeastern on Friday, Dec. 29 at 7 p.m.
