Tigers Rally for a 76-67 Win at Loyola

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team outscored Loyola University, 43-30 in the second half to claim a 76-67 comeback win on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers won their third straight game and improved to 4-4 on the year with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams battled early as a pair of free throws from senior center Daijha Thomas gave Towson an 8-6 edge with 6:18 to go in the first.
  • Loyola (2-7) answered with a 5-0 run and took an 11-8 lead with 4:47 to go in the period.
  • Sophomore forward Nukiya Mayo connected on a pair of free throws at 3:29 as Towson took a 12-11 lead in the game.
  • The Greyhounds closed the first quarter on a 10-5 run and took a 21-17 lead. Izzy Therien scored eight of Loyola's 10 points during that stretch.
  • Loyola scored nine of the first 11 points in the second quarter and took a 30-19 lead with 6:56 to go in the period. Stephanie Karcz led the Greyhounds with four points during that stretch.
  • Towson responded with a 12-4 run of its own and cut its deficit to three, 34-31 with 2:36 showing on the clock. Junior guard Danielle Durjan scored eight straight points for the Tigers during that scoring spurt, including a pair of big three-pointers.
  • Thomas kept the momentum going for the Tigers as Loyola looked to be on a breakaway but the Black and Gold's senior raced back and came up with a monster block.
  • The two teams traded baskets down the stretch as Thomas' jumper with 32 seconds left sent the Tigers into the half trailing by just four, 37-33.
  • Towson came out of the intermission with a hot hand. The Tigers opened the third quarter by scoring the first 10 points, and turned a four-point deficit into a six-point advantage. Senior forward Mary Cuevas scored six points as Towson took a 43-37 lead with 6:05 left in the stanza.
  • Loyola scored three straight points and made it a 43-40 game with 4:17 to go.
  • Towson used an 8-3 run to take a 51-43 lead with 2:33 left in the period. Redshirt senior guard Raine Bankston capped that run with a jumper.
  • The two teams traded baskets before sophomore guard Mariah Gray hit a pair of free throws with 29 seconds to go in the period. Gray's points gave Towson a 55-49 advantage in the game.
  • Loyola made one-of-two chances from the foul line with eight seconds left in the stanza and Towson took a 55-50 lead with 10 minutes to play.
  • Towson opened the fourth quarter on a 6-2 run and took a 61-52 lead with 5:48 to go in the game. Bankston had a pair of buckets to help the Tigers take their largest lead of the game.
  • Loyola used a 10-4 run to pull to within three, 65-62 with 2:24 to go in the game. Karcz scored six points for the Greyhounds during that stretch.
  • Towson took advantage of its opportunities from the foul line over the final two minutes. The Tigers were 11-for-19 from the charity stripe during that stretch. Bankston and Cuevas each made four during that stretch to seal the 76-67 win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson shot 41% from the field and tied its season-high with 27 made free throws. Loyola shot 34.8 percent from the field and made 17 free throws.
  • The Tigers won the rebounding battle for the eighth straight game. Towson pulled down a season-high 48 rebounds to Loyola's 39 boards.
  • Bankston led Towson in scoring for the second straight game as she finished with 17 points and added five rebounds.
  • Cuevas contributed 14 points and a career-high 17 rebounds for her third double-double of the year. Durjan was the third Tiger in double figures as she contributed 13 points.
  • Mayo finished with 11 rebounds and seven points for the Tigers.
  • Towson posted 12 steals in the game, it was the Tigers' third double-digit steals game of the season. Durjan tied for the team-lead with three steals as the Tigers improved to 4-0 when she records three or more steals in a game.
  • Karcz led Loyola with 23 points and eight rebounds.

The Tigers will be back in action when they head south to take on Norfolk State, on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m.
