SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman pitcher
Julia Smith-Harrington stranded the potential tying run in scoring position to help the Towson University softball team edge Georgetown, 2-1, in the first game of the USC Upstate/Furman Classic at Cyrill Stadium Saturday morning.
Smith-Harrington made the Tigers' slim edge stand-up to help Towson even its overall record at 3-3. The Tigers have three more games remaining in the tournament.
How It Happened
- Smith-Harrington retired six of the final seven batters she faced over the last two innings.
- Georgetown's Noelle Holiday doubled with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to put the pressure on the Tigers.
- Daria Edwards drew a two-out bases loaded walk that scored Caroline Reid with the decisive run.
- Towson scored in the fifth inning without a hit.
- Reid started the rally when she was hit by a pitch.
- Maddie Wilson was safe on an error and Kendyl Scott walked to load the bases.
- It appeared as if the Hoyas would escape when the next two Towson hitters were retired.
- The Hoyas tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning on Alexa Dolby's solo home run.
- Towson opened the scoring in the third inning when Wilson stole home.
