NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Towson University right hander
Skyler Morris allowed just one run over five innings, and
Colin Dyer drove in three runs to lead the Tigers to a 4-1 victory over CSUN in the 2017 season opener.
How It Happened
- The Tigers got on the board in the fifth inning as AJ Gallo went the other way with a double just inside the bag at third. Following a single from Richard Miller put runners on the corners, Colin Dyer drove in Gallo with a fielder's choice to second.
- The Matadors got the run back in home-half of the inning as a leadoff double came around to score on a two-out double from Justin Toerner.
- Towson quickly regained the lead in the sixth as Cuinn Mullins drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a fielding error by the second baseman. Gallo drove in Mullins with a single to right, and Dyer drove in his second run of the game with a groundout to third.
- Dyer added to the lead in the eighth with an RBI bloop single to right. The two-out rally started with a Gallo dribbler down the third-base line and a walk to Miller.
- Skyler Morris (1-0) kept the Matadors off balance all afternoon as he allowed just one run on four hits and five strikeouts over five innings.
- Kyle Stricker (1) was just as impressive out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit over four shutout innings.
- Andrew Weston (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits over 5.2 innings.
Inside The Numbers
- The victory over the Matadors marked the first time the Tigers won the season opener since defeating Wake Forest in 2014.
- Colin Dyer collected two hits and drove in three runs.
- AJ Gallo went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to become the first Tiger to collect three hits in a season opener since Brandon Gonnella and Brendan Butler each had three hits in the 2013 opener against McNeese State.
