Tigers Rally to Earn DH Split

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Colin Gimblet's bases-clearing double in the top of the eighth inning helped propel Towson University to a 7-2 victory over CSUN in the second game to earn a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon at Matador Field.  The Tigers dropped the first game 11-5.

Game 1
  • The Matadors got on the board first as they loaded the bases with one out in the second inning.  A potential inning-ending double play was thrown away at first, allowing two runs to score.
  • Towson got a run back in the fifth as AJ Gallo doubled to right and was followed by a Richard Miller single to right field.  The throw in from right got away from the cutoff man, allowing Gallo to hustle home.
  • The Tiger run was answered with two runs in the home half of the inning, before the Matadors added three more runs in the sixth.
  • Trey Martinez started the seventh inning with a solo blast to left field on the first pitch of the inning.
  • Towson continued to climb back into the game in eighth after Colin Gimblet blooped a single into center field.  Cuinn Mullins followed with a double off the wall in left field.  Martinez drove in a run with a groundout to third, and Gallo followed with a two-run blast to right field.
  • CSUN responded in the bottom of the eighth with a grand slam from Albee Weiss.
  • Kevin Ross (0-1) suffered the loss for the Tigers after allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits over 4.1 innings.
  • Samuel Myers (1-0) earned the victory after allowing one unearned run on four hits over five innings.
  • Gallo led the offense by going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Logan Burke added two hits.

Game 2
  • The Matadors jumped out to the early lead as they collected three hits and pushed across two runs in the first inning.
  • The next five innings would belong to the pitchers.  Tiger starter Dean Stramara settled down after the first inning and only gave up two hits over the next four innings.
  • CSUN starter Tei Vanderford did not allow a hit to the Tigers until Colin Dyer singled up the middle in the fifth inning.
  • The Tigers finally got to Vanderford with two outs in the sixth inning as Richard Miller doubled to left and Richie Palacios followed with a single through the left side.
  • After Palacios stole second, his second stolen base of the game, Vanderford uncorked a wild pitch to score Miller from third.
  • Tristan Howerton began the comeback in the eighth with a single to left.  AJ Gallo put down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away to put two on with no outs.  With two outs, Logan Burke walked to load the bases.
  • Colin Gimblet followed with the game-winning hit, a three-run double just inside the bag at third.
  • The Tigers offense came alive again in the ninth with a Dyer singled and went to third on a stolen base and wild pitch.
  • With two on and one out, Richard Miller hit a fly ball to left field that was dropped, allowing a run to score.
  • On the next pitch, Richie Palacios ripped a single through the right side to score two more runs.
  • The Tigers bullpen was in control for the final four innings.  Alex Cuas (1-0) did not allow a hit in his two innings to earn his first career win.
  • David Marriggi (1) surrendered two hits over two shutout innings to earn the save.
  • Palacios finished the game with two hits, two RBIs and three stolen bases.
  • Dyer added two hits and scored a run.
