No. 15/20 Towson Upsets No. 10 Notre Dame, 14-11

TOWSON, Md. – A three-goal halftime advantage proved to be the difference as the No. 15/20 Towson University women's lacrosse team upset No. 10/10 University of Notre Dame on Wednesday afternoon in Johnny Unitas® Stadium.

Playing their fourth top 10 team of the season, the Tigers (5-3) got their first win over a top 10 opponent since they beat No. 10 Georgetown, 14-10 in 2014.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers got off to a quick start scoring three goals in the first eight minutes. Redshirt senior attacker Alyssa Ferro got the scoring started with a goal at 28:15.
  • Sophomore attacker Carly Tellekamp found the back of the net before assisting on fellow sophomore attacker Natalie Sulmonte's goal at 22:57.
  • Notre Dame (8-3) scored two of the next three goals which made it a 4-2 game, in favor of the home team with 17:45 to go in the period.
  • Goals from junior midfielder Kaitlyn Montalbano and Sulmonte pushed the Towson lead to four, 6-2 with 13:58 showing on the clock.
  • The two squads traded goals as freshman midfielder Shelby Stack gave Towson a 7-3 advantage with 3:20 to go in the half.
  • Notre Dame scored the final goal of the half as Savannah Buchanan netted a free position goal with 51 seconds to play.
  • Towson took a 7-4 lead at the break.
  • The Fighting Irish carried the momentum of Buchanan's goal into the second half.
  • Notre Dame scored the first four goals of the second stanza and took an 8-7 lead with 15:43 to play. Grace Muller had a pair of goals during that run while Casey Pearsall assisted on three of the four tallies.
  • Towson used back-to-back goals from junior attacker Jenna Kerr and Sulmonte to take a 9-8 lead with 14:25 left on the clock.
  • Pearsall tied the game at 9-9 with an unassisted tally at 13:34.
  • The Tigers took the lead back for good as Tellekamp struck for her second of the day off a pass from senior attacker Samantha Brookhart at 8:19.
  • That goal started a 5-2 run by the Tigers to close out the contest and secure the 14-11 victory. Sulmonte struck twice during the run while Brookhart assisted on three of Tigers' five tallies.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson won its second straight game and was facing the Fighting Irish for the first time in program history.
  • Sophomore Angie Benson finished with eight big saves, seven of which came in the first half, to secure the win in goal. Samantha Giacolone made eight saves in the loss for Notre Dame.
  • Towson outshot Notre Dame 30-24 but the Fighting Irish held a 17-9 advantage in the draw control battle.
  • The Tigers recorded a season-high 15 caused turnovers as Notre Dame finished with 31 turnovers in the game. Ten Tigers recorded at least one caused turnover in the game. It was the most caused turnovers by a Towson team since they had 22 against George Washington in 2010.
  • Sulmonte finished with a game-high five goals and one assist for six points. She also added four groundballs, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
  • Tellekamp, Gillingham and Montalbano all finished with two goals and one assist. Montalbano's second goal of the game gave her 100 points for her career.
  • Brookhart had a team-high four assists.
  • Pearsall led Notre Dame with one goal, six assists and four draw controls.
 
Towson is back in action on Sunday, March 19 when it travels to Monmouth for a 1 p.m. contest.
