No. 15/20 Tigers Roll to 17-6 Win at Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The No. 15/20 Towson University women's lacrosse team scored the first nine goals of the game and rolled to a 17-6 win at Monmouth University on Sunday afternoon. Playing their third game in eight days, the Tigers (6-3) won their third straight contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior attacker Samantha Brookhart got the scoring started for the Tigers with a free position goal at 29:02. Brookhart's goal gave her 100 points for her career.
  • That goal kicked off a nine-goal run by the visitors that gave Towson a 9-0 lead with 8:05 to play in the stanza.
  • Sophomore attacker Natalie Sulmonte scored three times during that run for her hat trick while Brookhart struck for her second.
  • Monmouth (2-7) broke up the Towson scoring run with a goal from Kate Ryan at 4:24.
  • The Tigers weren't done though as junior midfielder Kaitlyn Montalbano scored her second of the day off a pass from Brookhart at 1:54.
  • The Hawks scored the final goal of the first period but the Tigers took a 10-2 lead at the half.
  • Towson opened the second half scoring with goals from junior midfielder Emily Gillingham and sophomore attacker Carly Tellekamp and led 12-2 with 25:02 to go in the game.
  • Monmouth sandwiched a pair of Ryan goals around a Towson score by freshman midfielder Shelby Stack. Towson led 13-4 with 18:48 to play.
  • The Tigers used a 3-0 run to push its lead to 16-4 with 7:46 left on the clock. Tellekamp scored her fourth and fifth goals of the day during that run while Gillingham netted her second.
  • Monmouth scored two of the final three goals in the game as Towson claimed the 17-6 victory.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson is in the midst of its second three-game win streak this season.
  • The Tigers outshot Monmouth 33-20 and finished with a 16-8 advantage in the draw control battle.
  • Towson recorded nine caused turnovers as Monmouth finished with 19 turnovers in the game.
  • Tellekamp led the Tigers with five goals while Sulmonte finished with three goals and two assists. Brookhart was the third Tiger to finish with five points on the day as she posted two goals and three assists.
  • Sulmonte pulled down eight draw controls against Monmouth. It was her seventh game this season with three or more draw controls.
  • Freshman defender Olivia Conti led the Towson defensive efforts with six groundballs and three caused turnovers while senior defender Kelly McQuilkin and junior defender Tianna Wallpher each had two caused turnovers and five groundballs.
  • Sophomore Angie Benson made five saves in the first half to earn the win in goal. Freshman Kiley Keating made three saves in the second half. Riley Brager made nine saves in the loss for Monmouth.
  • Sunday's win was head coach Sonia LaMonica's 79th on the Towson bench. That ties her with Missy Doherty for the program record for coaching victories.
 
Towson is back in action on Saturday, March 25 when it hosts Oregon at 2:30 p.m.
