Adams' Strong Start Not Enough at No. 16 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Towson University junior right hander Michael Adams allowed just three runs over 6.1 innings as the Tigers nearly knocked off No. 16 Virginia, falling 3-2 in the first game of a two-game series.

How It Happened
  • The Cavaliers took advantage of some tough luck for the Tigers as a line drive into left field was lost in the sun, resulting in a double to put runners on second and third with one out.
  • Adams was able to limit the damage to just one run on a groundout from Nate Eikhoff.  Adams got out of the inning with a fly ball to center field.
  • UVA added a run in the third inning after a one-out triple scored on an Ernie Clement sacrifice fly to center.
  • The Tigers got on the board in the fifth inning as Colin Dyer singled up the middle and raced around to score on a double down the left-field line off the bat of Trey Martinez.
  • Towson moved the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt, but a sliding catch in right field ended the inning with the tying run still at third.
  • UVA manufactured another run in the sixth as Joe McCarthy started the inning with a base hit.  He stole second and went to third on the throwing error.  Clement followed with a single through the left side to score what turned out to be the game-winning run.
  • The Hoos went to their closer, who had not allowed a run on the season, to start the eighth inning with a 3-1 lead.
  • Mark Grunberg, seeing his first action since the opening weekend of the 2016 season, ripped a one-out single through the right side.  He used his speed to advance to second on a wild pitch, then scored on a Richie Palacios single to center field.
  • Adams held one of the top offenses in the ACC to just three runs on seven hits in suffering his first loss of the season.
  • Kyle Stricker came out of the bullpen and held the Cavaliers off the board over the final 1.2 innings.
  • Derek Casey (2-0) picked up the win for the Cavaliers by allowing one run on five hits over six innings.  Tommy Doyle allowed one run on two hits over two innings in earning his fifth save of the season.
  • Grunberg led the offense by going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
  • Richard Miller added a pair of base hits.
