Tigers Hang Tough With #16 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In a game that featured more runs than hits, it was No. 16 Virginia who walked away with an 8-4 against the Towson Tigers Wednesday afternoon at Davenport Field.

How It Happened
  • The two teams combined for 12 runs on just eight combined hits and 15 combined walks.  They also committed five errors.
  • The Cavaliers took advantage of three errors by the Tigers in the first inning to push across four unearned runs.
  • UVA added to its lead in the third on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Nate Eikhoff.  That extended the Hoos lead to 6-0 despite recording only one hit.
  • The Tigers got on the board in the fourth after Richard Miller reached on an error with two outs.  After taking second on a passed ball, Colin Dyer singled to center to drive in Miller.
  • Towson added a pair of runs in the sixth inning without the benefit of putting the ball in play.  The Tigers showed patience at the plate as they drive five walks in the inning, including bases-loaded walks to Colin Gimblet and Noah Cabrera.
  • UVA got one of the runs back in the home half of the inning on a Pavin Smith home run.
  • Towson scored their fourth run of the game in the sixth inning as Trey Martinez drew a walk.  Dirk Masters singled into the hole at short and Mark Grunberg was hit by a pitch.  Logan Burke drove in Martinez with a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • Alex Cuas (1-2) got the start for the Tigers and allowed six runs, two earned, on just one hit over three innings.
  • Cody Reeser allowed two runs over three innings, while Matt Allen and Bo Plagge each tossed a scoreless frame.
  • Chesdin Harrington (1-0) picked up the victory after not allowing a hit in a predetermined three innings of work.  UVA would use seven more pitchers in the game that combined to walk nine Tiger hitters.
  • Mark Grunberg did what a leadoff hitter should do in drawing two walks and being hit by a pitch.
