Tennis Earns First Program Win over College of Charleston

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's tennis team earned its first program win, a 5-2 decision, over Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon at the Towson Center Courts.
 
Towson snapped a two-match losing streak with the win over the Cougars to improve to 7-5 overall. It was also the Tigers' first conference win of the season as they are now 1-1 in CAA play. The Cougars fell to 12-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
 
It was the sixth meeting all-time between the Tigers and Cougars. Today's win gave Towson its first against College of Charleston in program history.
 
How it Happened
  • Towson won two of the three doubles matches to clinch the match's opening doubles point. Lucy Williams and Lucy Gloninger combined for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles over Anastasia Palaska and Mara Argyriou. At No. 3 doubles, Sophie Lesage and Yevgeniya Shusterman defeated Christi Woodson and Sarah Jane Jones 6-1. College of Charleston's lone doubles win came at the top spot as Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely bested A.J. Gomer and Renate van Oorschodt 7-5.
  • Nicole Shakhnazarova claimed a tough third set victory over Liza Fieldsend 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 at the top singles spot.
  • Renate van Oorschodt defeated Rachel McNeely 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
  • At No. 5 singles, Barbora Vasilkova bested Anastasia Palaska 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in a thrilling third set matchup.
  • Lucy Gloninger posted a 7-6, 6-4 win over Turner Yates at the sixth singles spot.
  • College of Charleston earned a pair of singles wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. Christi Woodson earned a 7-5, 6-4 win over A.J. Gomer at the second singles flight. Mara Argyriou posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lucy Williams at No. 3 singles.
 
Up Next
Towson makes the short trip to in-state rival Morgan State on Tuesday, March 28. Towson then returns home for a four-match home stand which kicks off on Thursday, March 30 against Georgetown University.
