Towson Rebounds To Earn DH Split Against George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va.Olivia Baltazar and Julia Smith-Harrington delivered clutch performances at the perfect time to help the Towson University softball team beat George Mason, 3-1, and earn a split of the non-conference doubleheader at GMU Softball Complex Wednesday afternoon.

After dropping the opening game, 6-5, Towson needed the lift that Baltazar and Smith-Harrington provided to make the bus ride back to campus a little more enjoyable.

Records
Towson           11-16 overall
George Mason 7-20

Hitting Stars
  • Baltazar had three hits over the two games and drove in four runs to lead Towson. She hit .500 on the afternoon.
  • Kendyl Scott and Daria Edwards also had three hits over the two games.
  • Brook Miko walked four times during the course of the doubleheader.

How It Happened Game 1
  • George Mason scored four two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth innings to rally from a 5-2 deficit.
  • Leading Towson offensively was Scott and Baltazar, who had two hits each.
  • They each had gigantic hits in the Tigers' five-run fourth inning.
  • Baltazar began the run-scoring frenzy with a two-run single to right field that tied the game, 2-2, after Holiday Cahill and Shelby Stracher scored.
  • Kaylen Minnatee followed with a go-ahead pinch-single to left center that scored Baltazar.
  • If Towson has a big inning, Scott is usually in the middle of it and her RBI double scored Reid, which extended the Tigers' lead to 4-2.
  • Scott scored when Dylan Jarvis was safe on an error.
  • Megan Dejter struck out six batters.

How It Happened Game 2
  • Baltazar provided the boost Towson needed by hitting a two-run triple in the second inning that scored Holiday Cahill and Miko.
  • Scott followed with a RBI single that scored Baltazar.
  • Towson crammed four of its seven hits into the action-packed second inning.
  • Edwards led the Tigers with two hits in the nightcap.
  • That was more than enough support for Smith-Harrington, who struck out five batters in a complete game masterpiece.
  • Armed with a 3-0 advantage, Smith-Harrington did her best work in the third inning when she allowed one run after the Patriots loaded the bases with one out.
  • She struck out the last two batters of the inning to keep Towson's two-run lead safe.
  • George Mason didn't advance a runner past second base in the remaining four innings.

Inside the Numbers

  • The Tigers are 6-5 when scoring first.
  • Towson improved to 8-2 when it has been out-hit by its opponents.

  • She also drove in two runs in each game of the doubleheader and has three games this season with multiple RBIs.
  • Edwards has reached base safely in six straight games.
