HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Unaware of the Towson University softball team's struggles on Long Island, freshman pitcher
Julia Smith-Harrington dazzled in tossing a complete-game gem to help the Tigers earn a split against Hofstra in a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.
Smith-Harrington along with homers from
Brook Miko and
Kendyl Scott helped Towson win the second game, 3-1. The win was Towson's first triumph in this house of horrors since 2009 and snapped an 11-game losing streak on this field. Usually, anything that could go wrong did during the tough trips to Hofstra.
The run of bad luck continued when the Tigers dropped the opener, 6-5, when Hofstra scored a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. However, with Smith-Harrington making her first career appearance in this stadium, she was the streak-buster.
"That's pretty cool to help end that streak here," Smith-Harrington said while laughing. "I didn't know that."
It was the second straight pitching performance in which Smith-Harrington allowed one run. She lowered her earned run average to 3.54. She leads Towson with eight victories.
"My curve balls were working this game and then I was able to come back and hit spots with my fastball helped as well," Smith-Harrington said. "The first game was a tough loss. I was a little nervous in the beginning and I was able to calm myself down in the dugout before the game. Those two runs by Brook in the first inning really helped settle me in."
