Tennis Closes Out Regular Season with Three-Match Home Stand

TOWSON, Md. –The Towson University women's tennis team returns home to the Towson Center Courts to close out its regular season with a three-match home stand. The Tigers host Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival Drexel on Friday and welcomes Navy and Coppin State for a pair of matches on Saturday.
 
Match Details
The matchup between Towson and conference foe Drexel is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Friday.
 
On Saturday, Towson faces Navy at 11 a.m. before hosting Coppin State at 3:30 p.m.
 
All three matches will begin with doubles, followed by singles play.
 
Updating the Tigers
Towson is coming off a 5-0 win at Bucknell on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers improved to 11-9 (2-4 CAA) on the season with the victory, which snapped a two-match losing streak.   
 
The Tigers have six players with double-digit singles wins this season. Lucy Gloninger leads Towson with a 20-4 overall record and an impressive 14-2 mark in dual match play. Nicole Shakhnazarova has played at the top singles flight for the Tigers this season, going 12-7 in dual match play.
 
Singles play is proving to be critical to the Tigers' success this season. Towson is 71-45 in dual singles this season while just 29-26 in dual doubles play. Seven of the Tigers' eight losses this season have come when dropping the opening doubles point. Of those seven losses, five have been decided by one point with doubles being the pivotal point.
 
A.J. Gomer and Renate van Oorschodt lead doubles action for the Tigers at13-9 on the season and 10-7 in dual match play at the top flight.                                             
                                                                                                                                                        
Previewing the Dragons
Drexel enters Friday's match coming off a 4-3 loss against Delaware last Sunday. The Dragons are 15-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Six players have double-digit wins this season, led by Kendra Bunch who is 19-10 overall while playing primarily at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. Honami Yazawa is 16-8 on the season and 12-5 at the top singles spot. In doubles play, the Dragons are led by Bunch and Ghita Benhadi who have a team-best 20 wins.
 
Towson holds a 24-13 series lead over Drexel, including a 4-3 win at Vidas Courts last year.
 
Looking at the Mids
Navy is coming off a 7-0 sweep over Loyola on Wednesday that improved the Mids to 16-10 on the season. The Mids have 11 players with double-digit wins, led by Ansofi Wreder who is 25-8 overall. Wreder has a 12-4 dual play record while playing primarily at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. Amanda Keller is the Mids' top flight singles player, going 13-19 overall and 7-11 at No. 1 singles. The Mids' doubles play is led by Emily Louie-Meadors and Claudia Mackenzie who are 14-9 overall and 8-4 at the top flight.
 
Previewing the Eagles
Coppin State hosts Morgan State on Thursday for a 3 p.m. match before facing the Tigers on Saturday. The Eagles are 3-9 on the season and look to snap a two-match losing streak with a win over the Bears. This season, Coppin State is 13-59 in dual singles play and 7-29 in dual doubles action. Brittanie Cahua has a team-best four singles wins. Cahua and Carentxa Goede have won three doubles matches, a team-best.
 
Up Next
The Tigers will begin postseason action with the CAA Tournament on Thursday, April 20. The three-day tournament runs April 20-23 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Elon's campus.
