Williams Secures 4-3 Conference Win over Drexel

TOWSON, Md. – Junior Lucy Williams held on for a third set singles win to secure a 4-3 win for the Towson University women's tennis team against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival Drexel on Friday afternoon. The match between the Tigers and Dragons took place at the Towson Center Courts.
 
Towson improved to 12-9 overall and 3-4 in conference play while the Dragons fell to 15-8 on the season and 2-3 in CAA matches.
 
How it Happened
  • Towson won two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point. A.J. Gomer and Renate van Oorschodt opened doubles play with a 7-5 win against Ryshena Providence and Clary Rodriguez Cruz at the top flight. Drexel's lone doubles victory came at the third flight as Honami Yazawa and Lea Winkler combined for a close 7-5 win over Barbora Vasilkova and Lucy Gloninger. At No. 2 doubles, Lucy Williams and Yevgeniya Shusterman battled Kendra Bunch and Ghita Benhadi for a nail-biting 7-6(3) win to give Towson the doubles point.
  • Drexel responded to win the first singles match at the fourth flight. Lea Winkler posted a 6-1, 7-5 win over Barbora Vasilkova.
  • At No. 5 singles, Renate van Oorschodt earned an impressive third set comeback win against Clary Rodriguez Cruz, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
  • Honami Yazawa tied up the match at 2-2 with her 7-6, 6-4 win over Nicole Shakhnazarova at the top singles flight.
  • Lucy Gloninger gave Towson the edge again with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Ryshena Providence at No. 6 singles.
  • A.J. Gomer won her first set 6-4 against Kendra Bunch but couldn't hang on as Bunch won the second set 6-2 and the third set 7-5 at No. 3 singles.
  • Lucy Williams gave Towson its victory over the Dragons as she held on for a three set win against Ghita Benhadi at the second flight. Williams won the opening set 6-4 but Benhadi responded with a 6-4 win in the second set. Williams won the deciding set 6-4.
 
Up Next
Towson welcomes Navy and Coppin State for a pair of matches on Saturday to close out the regular season. The Tigers and Mids face off at 11 a.m., followed by the Tigers and Eagles at 3:30 p.m.
