Pitching Lifts Towson To A Pair Of Wins Over Howard

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team rode the dominant pitching of Megan Dejter and Julia Smith-Harrington to take a pair of non-conference games from Howard University at the Tiger Softball Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
 
Smith-Harrington threw her second consecutive shutout in as many days to help Towson win the opening game, 8-0. Dejter recorded a season-high seven strikeouts to help the Tigers win the nightcap, 5-1.
 
The two wins extended Towson's winning streak to a season best four games. Furthermore, this was the 20th consecutive season and 25th time in program history, the Tigers have won at least 20 games in a single season.

How It Happened Game One
  • Kendyl Scott and Shelby Stracher led the Tigers offense with two hits each.
  • Towson's first six hits went for extra bases.
  • Daria Edwards walked in the second inning and scored to give the Tigers a quick 1-0 lead.
  • Holiday Cahill and Stracher hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the third inning that gave Towson a 3-0 lead.
  • Madison Wilson and Scott hit consecutive homers in the fourth inning that expanded the Tigers bulge to 6-0.
  • Wilson's was a two-run blast over the rightfield fence.
  • Scott crushed a ball that hit off of the centerfield batting eye.
  • Olivia Baltazar and Scott delivered RBI singles in the fifth inning to help the Tigers earn their fourth shutout in the last eight days.

How It Happened Game Two
  • Daria Edwards paced Towson's 12-hit attack with her team-leading seventh three-hit game of the season.
  • Nicole Stockinger and Wilson had two hits each for the Tigers.
  • Howard's Kamryn Tillman, who also singled in the opening game, hit a one-out homer in the top of the first inning to give the Bison a 1-0 lead.
  • Tillman's homer ended Towson's 28.1 inning home scoreless streak.
  • Dejter settled down big time, retiring 18 consecutive Howard hitters.
  • Dejter struck out the side in the fourth inning.
  • Emily Ward delivered a two-out RBI single in the second inning that scored Edwards with the tying run.
  • Towson took the lead for good when it opened the fourth inning with three consecutive singles from Brook Miko, Stockinger and Edwards.
  • Miko scored on an Edwards single and a fielding error for a 2-1 lead.

Towson returns to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) competition when it hosts Drexel in a key three-game series. The series was adjusted because of the expected inclement weather on Sunday. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 3 p.m. and conclude the series Saturday with a single game at 12 p.m. The Dragons are 12-24 overall and 1-11 in the CAA.
