No. 17/20 Tigers Roll To 18-5 Win Over Johns Hopkins on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. – The No. 17/20 Towson University women's lacrosse team opened up an 11-1 halftime lead and rolled to an 18-5 win over local rival Johns Hopkins on Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale. Senior Samantha Brookhart had four assists in the game and set the Towson single-season assists record in the win.

With the win over the Blue Jays (11-6), the Tigers completed a sweep of their Greater Baltimore rivals for the second straight season (wins over UMBC, Loyola and Johns Hopkins).

THE BASICS
No. 17/20 Towson 18, Johns Hopkins 5
Johnny Unitas® Stadium, Towson, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson (12-5) wasted little time in getting its offense rolling. The Tigers scored just 36 seconds into the game as sophomore attacker Carly Tellekamp bounced home a low shot off a pass from fellow sophomore attacker Natalie Sulmonte.
  • That goal was part of a 7-0 run and was capped by a second goal from Tellekamp at 13:34.
  • Brookhart picked up an assist on three straight Towson goals during that scoring stretch. Her helper on junior midfielder Kaitlyn Montalbano's goal at 19:41 gave her 44 assists for the season, breaking Meggie McNamara's single-season record of 43.
  • The Tiger defense stood tall during the first 10 minutes of the game, holding the Blue Jays to just four shots. Sophomore Angie Benson made a pair of big stops during that stretch while the Towson defense forced a pair of early turnovers.
  • Johns Hopkins broke through with a goal from Alexis Maffucci at 10:10
  • Towson scored the final four goals of the half and took an 11-1 lead at the break. During that run to close the period, both Montalbano and Tellekamp finished off their hat tricks.
  • Johns Hopkins scored two of the first three goals in the second half which made it a 12-3 game with 23:26 to play. Maffucci struck for her second of the day during that stretch.
  • The Tigers used a 5-0 run to take a 17-3 lead with 10:23 to go in the game. Tellekamp struck for a pair during that scoring stretch while Montalbano and junior midfielder Emily Gillingham each contributed a goal and an assist.
  • The Blue Jays got back-to-back goals from Lexi Souder and Nicole DeMase which made it a 17-5 game with 4:29 showing on the clock.
  • Towson closed out the scoring on Senior Day with a goal from one of its seniors. Michaela Duranti forced a turnover on a Johns Hopkins clear and went straight to goal and scored. That made the final score 18-5.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson honored seniors Colby Unkle, Brookhart, Alyssa Ferro, Kelly McQuilkin, Jordan Clarke, Michelle Gildea and Duranti before the game. The seven seniors have helped the Tigers post 58 wins in their four years.
  • The Tigers outshot the Blue Jays 29-18 and held a 15-9 advantage in draw controls.
  • Benson made four saves to earn the win in goal. Freshman Kiley Keating made a pair of saves in relief work. Caroline Federico made seven saves in the loss for the Blue Jays. Haley Crosson had a pair of saves in relief.
  • Montalbano led Towson with seven points in the game. She scored five goals on five shots and added two assists to go along with a pair of draw controls and a ground ball.
  • Tellekamp also tallied five goals in the contest while Sulmonte had three goals and an assist.
  • Sulmonte and Gillingham helped the Tigers dominate the draw circle as each pulled down five draws in the game.
  • Brookhart had four assists and now has 47 on the season. That also raised Brookhart's career assists total to 89. She needs just two more assists to tie Ashleigh Rohrback's school record for career assists (91).
  • Maffucci led Johns Hopkins with two goals while Emily Kenul had two assists and four draw controls.

Towson is back in action when the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) semifinals happen on Friday, May 5. The Tigers, as the defending champs, will be the host and the number two seed. Towson faces No. 3 Elon at 6:30 p.m. following the No. 1 James Madison/No. 4 Delaware semifinal.
