HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Towson University baseball team took advantage of 17 free bases in defeating Hofstra, 11-6, Saturday afternoon. The victory clinched the weekend series for the Tigers.
How it Happened
- Towson hitters drew nine walks and were hit by eight pitches. Mark Grunberg drew four of the walks, while Richie Palacios, Billy Lennox and Cuinn Mullins were each hit by two pitches.
- The eight hit by pitches are just one off the of the school record set against Delaware State in 2002.
- The Tigers (12-15, 2-3 CAA) again wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as Grunberg started the game with a four-pitch walk. A one-out hit by pitch from Colin Gimblet set the table for a Richard Miller RBI single to center.
- Miller's RBI single was quickly followed two pitches later with a Lennox run-scoring single through the left side.
- The Pride (7-21, 1-4 CAA) were able to tie the game in the bottom of the inning on a Vito Friscia RBI triple and a wild pitch.
- Trey Martinez doubled with one out in the second to help start another rally. Walks to Grunberg and Palacios loaded the bases for Miller to plate all three runners with a double to left field.
- The fifth inning saw the Tigers push across five with runs on only one hit. A pair of walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. Colin Dyer was then hit by a pitch to drive in a run before Martinez and Grunberg each drew bases-loaded walks.
- Palacios recorded the only hit of the inning, a two-run single through the right side.
- Hofstra got three runs back in the seventh inning on a fielder's choice and a two-run homer from Mikey Riesner.
- The Tigers got two runs back in the ninth inning as Gimblet delivered an RBI single to left and Miller followed with a sacrifice fly to left.
- The 10 runs marked the fourth-straight game the Tigers have reached double figures. The last time the Tigers scored in double figures in four-straight games was April 2-6, 2010.
- Towson has also scored double digits in seven of the last eight games played at Hofstra.
- Kyle Stricker (2-2) picked up the victory in relief after allowing three runs on five hits over four innings.
- David Marriggi earned his third save of the season after giving up one hit and striking out one over the final 1.2 innings.
- Miller led the offense with a pair of hits and five RBIs.
- Lennox and Martinez each added two hits.
- Grunberg made the Pride pay for walking him four times as he stole two bases and scored three runs.
