TOWSON, Md. – In a game that was suspended a day due to lightning and rain, it was UNCW that edged Towson, 7-6, at Schuerholz Park.
How it Happened
- The Seahawks (28-26, 16-7 CAA) got on the board in the first inning after Daniel Stack was hit by a pitch and scored on a Nick Feight single up the middle.
- The Tigers (19-34, 5-18 CAA) answered back in the home-half of the inning with a Richie Palacios one-out single to right field. After a balk and a wild pitch moved him to third, Colin Gimblet hit a 3-0 pitch into center for an RBI base hit.
- Ryan Jeffers helped UNCW regain the lead in the second with a leadoff triple. He came into score when Zack Canada singled just inside the bag at third.
- Towson started the second inning with a single to left center from A.J. Gallo and a double to right center from Colin Dyer. Before the next pitch could be thrown, the game was put into a lightning.
- After a lengthy delay and a heavy rain shower, the game was suspended until Saturday.
- When the game resumed, the Tigers were unable to score either of the runners on base.
- UNCW was able to extend its lead in the third inning after a leadoff single was followed with a two-run homer to center field from Casey Golden.
- The lead grew to 5-1 in the fifth inning after a two-out walk was followed by a RBI double off the fence in left center from Brian Mims.
- The Tigers got a run back in the fifth as Mark Grunberg walked and Palacios followed with a line drive single to right center. With two outs, Billy Lennox dumped a single into center to score Grunberg.
- Towson took its first lead of the series in the sixth inning as they pushed across four runs with a two-out rally.
- Walks to Martinez and Grunberg set up a Palacios RBI single to right center. Following a walk to Gimblet, Richard Miller plated two runs with a single into left center.
- Billy Lennox gave the Tigers the lead as he went the opposite way with an RBI single through the right side.
- The lead did not last long as the Seahawks plated two runs in the seventh on a single from Brian Mims and a sacrifice fly from Canada.
- Kevin Ross (1-7) took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits over 4.2 innings.
- Dean Stramara retired all seven hitters he faced, including striking out each of the first four.
- Cory Gantz (3-0) did not allow a run over the final 3.1 innings to pick up the victory.
- Lennox led the offense by going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.
- Palacios added three hits and scored a pair of runs.
