Tigers Comeback Falls Just Short

ABERDEEN, Md. – The Towson University baseball team battled back from an early deficit and had the tieing run at third in the ninth inning before falling 6-5 to No. 23 Maryland Wednesday evening at Ripken Stadium

How it Happened
  • Trailing by two runs entering the ninth inning, Colin Gimblet singled to right field with one out.  Richard Miller followed with a double to left to score pinch hitter Jay Sanford from first.
  • The Tigers continued the rally with two outs as A.J. Gallo reached on catcher's interference and Bo Plagge singled into the hole at short to load the bases.
  • Unfortunately, the Tigers were unable to score the runner from third to end the game.
  • The Terps (30-13) got on the board in the fourth inning after Madison Nickens tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kevin Smith.
  • Towson (16-27) got the run back in the sixth as Richie Palacios singled to right field and stole second.  A wild pitch moved the runner to third and Colin GImblet plated him with a single into the hole at short.
  • Towson starter Matt Allen kept the Tigers in the game as he allowed just the one run through five innings.  He did run into a little trouble and surrendered a pair of runs in the sixth inning.
  • Allen came out of the game after allowing a leadoff walk in the seventh.  He finished the day allowing four runs and striking out six over 6.1 innings.
  • The Tigers offense came alive in the top of the seventh inning as Richie Palacios walked and went to second on a Gimblet single.
  • Miller singled to left to score Palacios before Billy Lennox tied the game with a groundout to short.
  • Gallo gave the Tigers the lead with an RBI single to center field.
  • The game got interesting in the bottom of the seventh as the Terps had a runner on third with one out.  A line drive into right center was caught by a diving Mark Grunberg for the second out.  The runner from third was able to score on the play despite an appeal from the dugout that the runner left early.
  • UM started the eighth inning with a solo home run from AJ Lee, then got what turned out to be the game-winning run on a single to left from Will Watson.
  • Plagge, who went 2-for-4 at the plate, took the loss on the mound after giving up two runs on three hits over 1.2 innings.
  • Mike Rescigno (2-1) picked up the win in relief after allowing one run on two hits over 1.1 innings.
  • Ryan Selmer (7) allowed a hit and struck out two to earn the save.
  • Gimblet led the team with three hits, while Palacios, Miller, Gallo and Plagge each had two.
