Ninth Inning Rally Not Enough

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Towson University baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning, but it was not enough as the Tigers fell, 7-6, to James Madison in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.

How it Happened
  • Trey Martinez started the ninth inning rally with a single to right field on the first pitch of the inning.  Richie Palacios was hit by a pitch and Colin Gimblet walked to load the bases with one out.
  • A wild pitch allowed one run to score before A.J. Gallo drove in two runs with a two-run single up the middle.
  • The Tigers were unable to bring home the tieing run from second as a strikeout ended the game.
  • The Tigers (17-29, 5-13 CAA) got off to a quick start as Mark Grunberg hit the second pitch of the game over the fence in right center for a solo home run.  It was his first home run of the season.
  • The Dukes (21-22, 5-13 CAA) answered right back with three runs in the home half of the first.  Zach Tondi plated two of the runs with a single to center field.
  • JMU was aided by a Tiger error in loading the bases with nobody out.  Starter David Marriggi nearly got out of the inning without any damage as he struck out the next three hitters, but there were two passed balls mixed in to score two unearned runs.
  • Towson loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth as Grunberg walked and Palacios and Gimblet singled.
  • Richard Miller drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field, but that would be all as a double play ended the inning.
  • The sixth inning saw Towson again load the bases with no outs, but again only managed one run.  Gallo walked, and Cuinn Mullins and Colin Dyer were hit by pitches.  A Trey Martinez grounder plated a run, before a foul ball down the right-field line turned into an inning-ending double play.
  • JMU added to its lead in the seventh with an RBI double from Ryan Coale and a run-scoring single from Ky Parrott.
  • Marriggi (4-4) took the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits and six strikeouts over four innings.
  • Matt Marsili (1-4) did not allow a hit over 1.2 innings to earn the victory.
  • Gimblet the offense by going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Palacios added two hits and scored a run.
