Eighth Inning Wild Pitch Gives Tigers 4-3 Win

TOWSON, Md. – A wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning helped Towson University complete the comeback in a 4-3 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore Tuesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.

How It Happened
  • With the game tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Matt Smith took a 3-2 outside for a leadoff walk.
  • Andrew Cassard followed by popping up a bunt on the right side of the infield that fell to the ground just out of the reach of the diving pitcher.  Cassard's speed allowed him to beat the throw to first.
  • A.J. Gallo entered as a pinch hitter and put down a perfect sacrifice bunt down the third base line to advance both runners into score position.
  • With Noah Cabrera at the plate, a fastball was in the dirt and went through the legs of the catcher allowing pinch runner Jay Sanford to score from third.
  • The Tigers (18-29) were in a tie game as they took advantage of a throwing error with two outs in the sixth.
  • On the next pitch after the error, Cabrera hit a double into the corner in right field to tie the game.
  • Left hander Matt Golczewski (0-1) controlled the game from that point as he allowed just one hit over three scoreless innings to earn his first victory of the season.
  • MDES (12-37) jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the first inning after Jordan Martin doubled to left and scored on a Ryan Rotondo single to left center.
  • Rotondo helped extend the lead to 3-0 in the third as a pair of Tiger errors set up the two-run single to center.
  • Towson got on the board in the home-half of the third as Cabrera hit the first pitch of the inning into right center for a single.  After walks to Tristan Howerton and Richie Palacios loaded the bases, Richard Miller drew the third walk of the inning to score Cabrera.
  • A pair of freshman led the way offensively as Cassard and Cabrera each collected two hits.
  • Kyle Stricker got the start for the Tigers and allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits and five strikeouts over six innings.
  • Caleb Walston (0-1) took the loss for the Hawks as he gave up one run on two hits over two innings of work.
