TOWSON, Md. – Bo Plagge got his first collegiate win and
Billy Lennox hit is his first home run as the Towson University baseball team completed the series sweep with a 4-2 victory over UMBC Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
The victory completed the home-and-home series sweep. The Tigers won 7-3 in 11 innings back on March 8.
How it Happened
- Lennox gave the Tigers the early 1-0 advantage in the second inning as he hit the first pitch of the inning over the fence in left field.
- Matt Allen entered the game in the second inning and kept the Retrievers off the board for the first three innings.
- UMBC (18-21) got on the board in the fifth inning as Kyle Benjamin hit a solo home run to left field.
- After a double and a single, Jamie Switalski gave the Retrievers the 2-1 lead with a groundout to third.
- The Tigers (19-29) wasted little time in answering back as Colin Dyer hit the first pitch into left field for a single and Tristan Howerton followed with a single to center. Dyer was running on the pitch and hustled over to third, while Howerton was alert and took second on the play.
- That proved important as Mark Grunberg grounded out to score Dyer and John Drexel hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Tigers the 3-2 lead.
- That would be all that was needed for Plagge (1-3). The freshman controlled the rest of the game as he only surrendered one hit and struck out six over the final 4.1 innings.
- The only hit he surrendered was a one-out double in the sixth, but came back to strike out each of the next two hitters.
- Plagge did not have a three-ball count on any of the 15 hitters he faced. He threw 39 of his 56 pitches for strikes.
- Towson added an insurance run in the eighth after Colin Gimblet drew a pinch-hit walk and went to second on a balk. He advanced to third on a flyout to center and scored on a Grunberg single into the hole at short.
- Lennox led the offense by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Grunberg singled, walked and drove in two runs in his four plate appearances.
