FARMVILLE, Va. – Trending away from the norm of 2017, the Towson University women's soccer team did not score until the 66
th minute as the Tigers collected their first road win of the season, topping host Longwood 1-0 on Thursday night at the Longwood Athletic Complex.
Junior forward
Sarah Quick and senior midfielder Maddie Bové connected midway through the second half to give Towson (2-0-1) the only goal it needed for the road win.
How It Happened
- It was a slow first half as the teams combined for seven total shots. Longwood (1-1-0) out-shot the Tiger 5-2 in the opening stanza, but could not get any efforts on cage.
- Conversely, the Tigers put both of their shots on goal, both off the foot of sophomore midfielder Nikki Logan.
- Longwood keeper Maria Kirby stopped both of Logan's attempts as the teams ended the first half tied 0-0.
- The Lancers, who have yet to play away from home, opened the second half with four shots in the first 10 minutes of the fresh period.
- Towson's Taylor Sebolao made one save in that span, while two Longwood shots went wide and a third was blocked.
- In a counter attack, Bové slide a perfect pass forward to Quick in the 66th minute as the latter chipped her shot over Kirby to provide the lone goal of the contest.
- The Lancers kept Sebolao on her toes throughout the remainder of the second half as the redshirt senior stopped five more attempts after the Quick goal to preserve her second-straight shutout and the 13th clean sheet of her career.
Behind the Numbers
- Longwood out-shot the Tigers 17-4 in the match, but Towson had a much higher shots on goal percentage, putting all four efforts on frame.
- Sebolao stopped seven shots in the shutout while her counterpart made three saves.
- Corner kicks were nearly even, with the Lancers earning four to the Tigers' three.
- The Tigers improved to 2-0-1 in the early portion of 2017, the program's best start through three games since the 2007 campaign. That Tiger squad opened the year 3-0-0, including a 5-0 win over Longwood.
- Towson is now 2-0-0 all-time against Longwood while picking up its first true road win over the Lancers. The previous meeting on Sept. 7, 2007 was played in Annapolis.
- Sebolao has logged back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season and marks the first such streak since the Tigers blanked five straight foes in the 2015 season.
- Towson has not allowed a goal since the 62nd minute of the first game against UMBC. The Tigers have held opponents scoreless for the last 228 minutes.
- Towson has been unbeaten in its last four nonconference games, dating back to a 2-0 win over George Washington on Sept. 18, 2016.
- The Tigers are now even all-time against institutions currently aligned with the Big South Conference at 11-11-2. Towson played in the Big South in 1993 and 1994.
Up Next for Towson
- Towson continues the longest road trip of the nonconference schedule on Sunday with a rematch from 2016 at East Carolina.
- Game time is slated for 1 p.m. at the Pirates' Johnson Stadium.
- East Carolina (1-0-0) will play on the road at in-state foe Davidson Friday night at 7 p.m.
That's What He Said: Greg Paynter – Towson Head Coach.
They were a good, feisty team. This is a tough place to play and a great facility with fans right on top of you. Longwood was pretty elevated in their skill set and work ethic, but most importantly, if we think we're going to go on the road and win, we're going to have to work. We have to be able to execute. I think we did a better job of that in the second half.
They had a couple of scrambles in front of the net, but they played a lot of long shots too, which plays into the strengths of Sebs. The three outside backs we're using right now are all new to the program and we're working on the learning curve there.
