Woodall's Big Day Not Enough as Tigers Fall to Longwood, 1-0

TOWSON, Md. – Senior Emilee Woodall had a huge day in goal but it was not enough as the Towson University field hockey team fell to Longwood University, 1-0 in the Tigers' home opener. Woodall finished with 13 saves for the Tigers, the majority of which came in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams battled early as the Tigers were awarded a penalty corner just 9:38 into the game. However the Lancers thwarted a shot attempt by the Tigers after junior Devon Hake inserted the ball.
  • The two teams continued to fight on both ends of the field. Woodall came up with a big save as the Tigers found themselves two players down after a pair of green cards were awarded.
  • Woodall continued to stand tall in goal for the Tigers. She made four first half saves and the two squads went into the half tied at 0-0.
  • Woodall made three saves in the opening minutes of the second half.
  • Longwood (2-0) finally broke through and got on the board at 43:40. Towson was playing two players down, after a pair of yellow cards, when the Lancers were awarded a penalty corner.
  • Briana Greene inserted the ball and Lil-Sophie Achterwinter snuck a shot just inside the near post for the goal.
  • Towson had a chance at 62:43 as freshman Valerie Hajek fired off a shot but Longwood goalie Katie Wyman came up with the save.
  • The Tigers had another chance at 66:41 as Hake inserted the ball on a corner but freshman Nathalie Tortolero's shot went wide.
  • Despite 10 second half saves, the Tigers fell to Longwood 1-0.  
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson finished the game with 14 saves. Woodall was credited with 13 of those stops while Hake picked up a second half defensive save.
  • Woodall now has 19 career games with double digit saves.
  • Wyman made just one save to earn the win in goal for the Lancers.
  • Longwood outshot the Tigers 18-2 and held a 14-4 edge in penalty corners.
  • For the second straight game, the Tiger line-up featured five freshmen as starters.

The Tigers are back on the field on Friday, Sept. 1 as they host Lock Haven at 7 p.m.
