Tigers Fall to No. 20 American to Conclude the Terrapin Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Towson field hockey team totaled a season-high seven shots, including four on goal, as the Tigers fell to No. 20 American on Sunday in the Terrapin Invitational at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on the campus of the University of Maryland.

How It Happened
  • Just six minutes into the game, American (4-2) had a flurry of activity in front of the Towson cage, totaling five shots and two penalty corners. However, senior Emilee Woodall saved each one, including a pair of back-to-back shots off consecutive penalty corners.
  • Three minutes later, Towson had great opportunities to score the game's first goal, totaling four shots and three penalty corners in a span of two minutes. Freshmen Kendra Sykes and Valerie Hajek each had two shots during the flurry, forcing American keeper Maura Jacobs to make two saves to keep the game scoreless.
  • After a scoreless first 20 minutes, the Eagles finally broke through, scoring two goals just 2:57 apart to take a 2-0 lead. Kathryn Roncoroni scored the first of her two goals to open the scoring.
  • Woodall made eight of her 19 saves in the first half to hold American to just two goals. As a team, the Tigers limited the Eagles to just 11 shots while totaling five of their own.
  • American opened the second half with five shots and two penalty corners in the first five-plus minutes with Woodall making three saves and freshman Jenna Florenzo picking up her first defensive save of the season.
  • The Eagles picked up their third goal of the game just over five minutes into the half as Haley Bowcutt scored unassisted on a rebound off the team's second corner.
  • American turned up the pressure over the next 12 minutes, putting four more shots on goal that were saved by Woodall before striking for its fourth goal of the game.
  • Ella Arata capped the scoring with the Eagles' fifth goal on a tip in with just 1:05 left in the game.

Behind the Numbers
  • In two games against nationally-ranked teams at the Terrapin Invitational this weekend, Woodall totaled 53 saves. She currently leads the CAA in saves per game at 15.00 while ranking fourth in Division I (as of Sept. 7).
  • Florenzo is the third Tiger to make a defensive save this season. As of the last NCAA statistical rankings, Towson was ranked second in the CAA and seventh nationally in defensive saves.
  • American finished with a 29-7 edge in shots.
