TOWSON, Md. – It was a defensive chess match at the Tiger Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon as the Towson University women's soccer team played visiting Temple University to a scoreless draw.
The game's goalkeepers combined for a dozen saves while the offensive players all chipped in for 29 total shots. It was the first draw in the series with Temple, which Towson leads 3-1-1.
How It Happened
- Towson (3-4-2) had the game's first real scoring chance. Following a Temple (3-3-1) foul in the 22nd minute, sophomore Monica Scaglione sent a cross into the box to a waiting Maddie Bové, but the senior's header chance was stopped by Temple's Morgan Basileo.
- The Tigers, who are two games into a five-game home stand, got another scoring chance in the 26th minute as Evelyn Neidert put a corner kick into the box that Basileo punched out. Sophomore forward Elizabeth Coletti collected the rebound but put a chance over the crossbar.
- Towson continued pressure in the 38th minute as sophomore Nikki Logan and rookie Afton Kalkose connected passes up field, setting the former up for a shot it was halted by Basileo.
- The first half ended in a 0-0 tie, despite a bulk of the chances from the Tigers.
- Things got chippy in the middle of the second half as Temple was hit with a pair of yellow cards, one on a player and second on the team bench. Towson was also hit with a yellow against McKenzie McCaull.
- Temple got several deep threats in near the 70th minute as the Owls sailed in four-straight corner, putting the Tiger defense against the wall, but the fourth and final corner fell over the back of the net.
- The Owls' best opportunity of the second half came in the 83rd minute as Bella Sorrentino put a header on goal, but Tiger keeper Taylor Sebolao made the save to keep the slate clean.
- Towson's final offensive chances of regulation came in the 86th and 87th minutes. Coletti sent in a cross looking for Logan, but the pass bounced off the top of the cross bar. Neider came downfield a minute later on a breakaway, but her attempt went wide of the goal.
- Halfway through the first overtime period, Temple got its best chance of the period as Gabriella McKeown took a shot, forcing Sebolao to make a diving save.
- In the 99th minute, McCaull took a bullet of a shot at point-blank range, but Basileo was too quick and kept things going to double overtime.
- The game's best scoring chance came in the 108th minute as junior defender Alexis Toles put a perfect ball into the box for senior linemate Kristyn Hubbard, but the latter was closely called offsides.
Behind the Numbers

- Temple narrowly out-cornered the Tigers 13-10, with Towson weathering nine in the second half and one in the second overtime.
