Women’s Soccer Hangs Tough with No. 18 Georgetown

TOWSON, Md. – While the 2-0 score may not truly indicate how close the game was, the Towson University women's soccer team hung tough with No. 18 Georgetown University Sunday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Complex.

Towson (3-5-2) was playing its second game in the last three days while Georgetown (6-2-1), which reached the NCAA Final Four last season, was playing its first game since Sept. 10.

How It Happened
  • Georgetown put the offensive pressure on the Tigers early, taking four shots in the first 10 minutes. Only one of those attempts found the frame, with a Towson defender making a team save behind Tiger keeper Taylor Sebolao.
  • The Hoyas broke the deadlock in the 20th minute on a Caitlin Ferrell goal. The Georgetown forward dribbled around her defender and finished to the far post on a perfect shot.
  • That was the long goal of the first half. The got one shot from the foot of senior Kelsey Ritter on a long-range, but tricky, shot. Arielle Schechtman made her only save of the game on that chance.
  • Georgetown controlled the game in the first 45 minutes, taking 13 total shots. Sebolao made two saves on the Hoyas' three shots that reached the goal.
  • Early in the second stanza, the Hoyas doubled their lead on a corner kick. Rachel Corboz sent in the long ball and found the head of Meaghan Nally inside the box for a 2-0 Georgetown lead.
  • Towson's best chance of the afternoon came in the 60th minute as the Tigers connected passes through the midfield. Sophomore Justine Stoner sent a ball over the Hoya defense to classmate Sydney Davis, who had a breakaway chance with Schechtman. Davis' attempt went wide left of the post, however, ending Towson's scoring chances.

Behind the Numbers
  • The Hoyas out-shot Towson 23-2 in the full 90 minutes. However, only six of those chances made it on goal. Sebolao finished with three saves.
  • Corboz was busy on the corners for Georgetown as she took all 11 Hoya corner kicks.
  • The two-goal differential was the closest game between the two schools since Towson's last win in 2000, a 3-2 overtime decision.
  • Towson is three games into a five-game home stand. The Tigers are 0-2-1 in those games to date.
  • The Tigers are 1-1-1 this season against opponents with a dog mascot, tying UMBC (Retrievers), beating Loyola (Greyhounds) but falling to Georgetown (Hoya/bulldog).
  • Sunday's result was the first time in 2017 the Tigers had a game decided by more than one goal or resulted in a tie this season.
