Ho Scores as Tigers Fall in 2-1 Heartbreaker to Saint Francis

TOWSON, Md. – Freshman Beira Ho punched home a rebound for her first career goal as the Towson University field hockey team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to Saint Francis University on Sunday afternoon in Johnny Unitas® Stadium. Ho is the third Tiger freshmen to score their first career goal this weekend.

THE BASICS
Saint Francis 2, Towson 1
Johnny Unitas® Stadium, Towson, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers wasted little time pushing the ball forward on offense as freshman Peppe Haantjes registered a shot just 58 seconds into the game but Elizabeth Dyer was able to make the save for Saint Francis (2-2).
  • The remainder of the first half saw both teams battle back and forth but neither was able to break through on the scoreboard.
  • Senior Emilee Woodall came up with six big first half saves for the Tigers and the two teams went into the half knotted at 0-0.
  • The Red Flash broke through to start the second half as Taylor Nesmith dribbled the ball in from the near side and after Woodall came out to try and make a play, Nesmith popped it up and over her into the net for the 1-0 lead.
  • Woodall came up with a pair of saves before the Tigers were awarded a penalty corner in the 53rd minute. Senior Taylor Kvilhaug took the initial shot and after Dyer made the save, Ho corralled the rebound and punched it home for the goal.
  • Saint Francis was able to regain the lead just over minutes later. The Red Flash were awarded a penalty corner and Brianna Govia scored off a pass that was inserted by Hannah Retherford.
  • Woodall made four saves down the stretch but the Tigers were unable to score the equalizer and Saint Francis secured the victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Dyer finished with three saves to earn the win in goal for Saint Francis. Woodall posted 11 saves for the 20th double-digit save game of her career.
  • Sophomore Paige Zaleppa made a defensive save for the Tigers.
  • Ho joined classmates Valerie Hajek and Kendra Sykes as Tigers who scored their first career goal over the weekend.
  • It was the second straight year the Tigers and Red Flash played a one goal game.

The Tigers are back in action on Friday, Sept. 8 when they travel to College Park, Maryland to take on the University of Maryland at 1 p.m. in the Terrapin Invitational.
