ELON, N.C. -- The Towson University women's basketball team mounted a furious comeback in the third quarter Friday night at Elon University. But the Tigers could not erase the deficit, falling 84-61 at Alumni Gym.
Four Tigers (7-11, 2-5 CAA) finished in double-digits, paced by a dozen each from Mary Cuevas and Daneille Durjan. For the former, it was the 14th-straight game with 10 or more points.
Â
Elon (11-6, 3-3 CAA) also had a balanced scoring effort with five players in double-digits. Shay Burnett led the game with 18 points behind six-for-six from 3-point range.

How It Happened
- With the Phoenix leading 8-7, Elon went on a 10-1 run over a 90 second stretch to build to a 16-8 lead.
- After Elon took a 19-8 lead, Maia Lee knocked down a free throw with 11 seconds left in the first quarter to keep the Tigers within range.
- Behind sophomore Etaliya Vogt, the Tigers clawed their way back into the game. Towson pulled back within four of the Phoenix thanks to eight points from Vogt in the first two minutes of the second.
- Elon went on another burst, taking 17-point lead past the midway point of the second quarter. The Phoenix took a 15-point lead, 40-25, into the halftime break.
- Towson opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run, getting points from three different sources: Durjan, Cuevas and Nukiya Mayo. The trio whittled the Elon lead to nine, 40-31.
- The Tigers continued to chip away at the lead, eventually getting to within four at the midway point of the third. Raine Bankston drilled a three-pointer on a Mayo dish.
- A quick Phoenix burst gave the hosts a 13-point lead at the end of the third frame.
- Late foul trouble sealed the Tigers' fate. Towson could not get back within single digits of the Elon lead.

Behind the Numbers
- Cuevas and Durjan dropped 12 points each. It marks the 15th time this season that Cuevas reached double digits. Durjan has done likewise in back-to-back games and now has five such games this season.
- Towson dominated on the boards, pulling down 45, including 28 on defense. The Phoenix wrangled 35, but nine on offense led to nine second-chance points.
- The key to the Tigers' third-quarter surge lay behind a 53.3 percent shooting percentage in the third quarter. Combined in the second and third quarters, Towson knocked down 14 of 27 chances, only three of which were from three-point range.
- Turnovers hurt the Tigers as Elon capitalized for 26 points on Towson turnovers.
