WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior forward
Mary Cuevas poured in a game-high 23 points to lead the Towson University women's basketball team to a 67-66 win over the College of William & Mary on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Cuevas added a game-high 14 rebounds to post her sixth double-double of the season for the Tigers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- With the first quarter tied at 8-8, William & Mary (11-3, 2-1 CAA) got back-to-back buckets from Gabby Rogers and took a 12-8 lead with 4:12 left in the stanza.
- A bucket from Cuevas and a free throw from redshirt junior center Maia Lee pulled the Tigers (6-9, 1-3 CAA) to within one, 12-11 at the end of one period of play.
- William & Mary opened the second quarter with a three-pointer from Bianca Boggs and pushed its lead to 15-11 with 9:08 to go in the stanza.
- Towson responded with an 8-2 run and took a 19-17 lead with 6:52 showing on the clock.
- The Tribe used a three-pointer from Nari Garner to go back on top, 20-19 with 6:20 to go until the half.
- A jumper from freshman guard Jalynn Holmes at 5:51 started a 6-0 run by the visitors as Towson took a 25-20 lead with five minutes left in the period.
- William & Mary scored nine of the next 11 points and took a 29-27 advantage with two minutes left until the break. Boggs struck for seven of those nine points.
- Towson closed the second quarter on an 8-2 run and took a 35-31 lead at the half. Cuevas scored four points during that stretch.
- The Tribe opened the third quarter on an 8-4 run and tied the game at 39-39 with 6:22 showing on the clock. Victoria Reynolds had four points for William & Mary during that stretch while sophomore guard Etalyia Vogt accounted for all four of the Towson points.
- Towson scored 10 of the final 16 points in the period and led 49-45 with 10 minutes to play. Cuevas tallied five points during that stretch while Holmes added three points.
- The Tigers opened the fourth quarter on a 7-4 run and took a 56-49 lead with 7:09 to go in the game. Freshman forward Tess Borgosz had a jumper during that stretch.
- William & Mary scored eight straight points and took a 57-56 lead with 4:27 showing on the clock. Reynolds scored half of the Tribe's points during that stretch.
- The two teams traded points and found themselves tied at 58-58 with 3:53 to go in the game.
- Redshirt senior guard Raine Bankston hit a pair of shots from the foul line at 3:30 and Towson took a 60-58 lead.
- The Tigers and Tribe continued to battle as Boggs made one-of-two from the foul line at 1:16 and pulled William & Mary to within one, 63-62.
- Cuevas connected on four straight chances from the foul line and pushed the Towson lead to five, 67-62 with 29 seconds to go.
- A lay-up from Abby Rendle pulled William & Mary to within three, 67-64 with 22 seconds left on the clock.
- A Towson turnover gave the Tribe the ball back but Bankston came up with a block on the three-point attempt and a second three-point attempt by William & Mary fell short.
- The Tribe got a lay-up at the buzzer but it was not enough as Towson earned its first CAA victory of the season, 67-66.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Towson shot 38.1 percent from the field but was a solid 18-for-22 (81.8%) from the foul line. William & Mary posted a 40.3 field goal percentage but was 12-for-18 from the line.
- The Tigers won the rebounding battle, 44-35. It was the 13th time in 15 games that the Tigers have outrebounded their opponent.
- In a battle of the top two blocking teams in the CAA, both squads recorded 11 blocks.
- The Tigers scored 18 points off 16 Tribe turnovers in the game.
- The Tigers have now won three of their last four meetings with William & Mary.
- Cuevas' double-double was her sixth of the season. It was also the fourth time in the last five games she has scored at least 20 points, tying her career-high with 23.
- Cuevas blocked six shots in the game, her second game this season with that many rejections.
- Bankston finished with 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Tigers.
- Lee had a season-high nine rebounds, five points and three blocks for the Tigers.
- Boggs led William & Mary with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, Jan. 12 when they host UNCW at 7 p.m. in SECU Arena.
