Five Doubles Lead Towson Over UNCW in Five Sets

TOWSON, Md. -- Playing in its first home match since mid-September the Towson University women's volleyball returned home in fine fashion as the Tigers took down UNCW in a five-set thriller Friday night at SECU Arena during Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action.

The Tigers (9-11, 4-3 CAA) overcame a negative-swinging second set and a 2-1 deficit to steal the win back from the Seahawks, who were sitting in second in the league standings entering Friday night.

UNCW (10-5, 3-2) struggled in the deciding set, hitting for negative as the Tigers claimed the fifth frame 15-9.

For the first time in SECU Arena, the Tigers and Seahawks had the use of video replay as the CAA begins a shift to replays. The league tournament, hosted at the College of Charleston in mid-November, will feature video replays. Three plays were challenged in the Friday night tilt.

How it Happened
  • With the first set tied 3-3, the Seahawks ripped off four unanswered points to take a 7-3 lead. Towson later trailed 11-6 before surging past the visitors with a 7-0 run en route to a 13-11 lead.
  • UNCW put together a small run of its own to wrest back a 14-13 lead. The first set was back-and-forth through the middle portion of the frame, but the Tigers slowly built to a 20-16 advantage.
  • The Seahawks pulled back within one, 21-19, but Towson slammed the door on the first set with five unanswered points, thanks to kills from Annie Ertz, Silvia Grassini, Emily Jarome and Jocelyn Kuilan. The Tigers took set one 25-19.
  • After Towson took a 6-5 lead in the second set, the Seahawks took a 15-11 lead, largely on Tiger miscues. UNCW took a 23-14 lead before Towson stopped a 4-1 run. The Seahawks took the second set 25-15 after a Tiger attack error.
  • Set three saw Towson jump out early for a 4-1 lead, bolstered by a pair of Olivia Finckel kills. UNCW bounced back and tied the third set 5-5.
  • Both sides traded shots before Towson mounted a 4-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. Closing in on set-point, Towson held a 19-14 lead. The Seahawks scored six-straight points to take a 20-19 lead, again aided by Towson miscues.
  • Towson held a 21-20 lead late in the third, but UNCW scored three in a row for a 24-22 lead, forcing a Tiger timeout. The pause worked as Towson surged to deadlock the third at 24-24, but UNCW hit the final two points to take the third 26-24 and go up 2-1 in set scores.
  • The Tigers trailed by an 8-4 count seemed to seal Towson's fate. An 11-1 run by the Tigers, unhindered by a UNCW timeout, put Towson back up 15-9. Holding a 21-18 lead, Towson forced a fifth set thanks to four unanswered points that included two Kuilan kills for a 25-18 win.
  • UNCW scored a 4-1 lead early in the deciding set, but the Tigers surged again with four more unhalted points for a 5-4 advantage. After the fifth was tied 7-7, Towson went on a 4-1 run for an 11-8 lead.
  • Towson picked up its first fifth-set win in nearly a month as the Tigers ripped off four unanswered points. Match-point was decided on a Finckel solo block that the Seahawk defense could not get to for a 15-9 Tiger win.

Behind the Numbers
  • Both sides struggled on the attack Friday night as Towson hit for .185 while UNCW went for .144. Towson closed well, however, hitting for .236 in the fourth and fifth sets combined.
  • Towson had five players with double-doubles on Friday, nearly doubling the team's season total in one match. Jarome logged the first double of her career with 17 kills and 10 digs while Kuilan logged her first of the year on 14 kills and 10 digs. Ertz rounded out the double-digit kills with 12 while tacking on 12 digs.
  • Setter Peyton Moyles put up 16 assists along with 10 digs while libero Anna Holehouse had 11 assists and a match-high 28 digs. Moyles' co-setter, Marrisa Wonders, was one dig shy of a double as she posted a team-best 20 assists.
  • Towson dropped in nine service aces, including four from Holehouse and two each from Jarome and Silvia Grassini.
  • Friday's win was the sixth-straight victory for the Tigers over UNCW dating back to the second meeting in 2015. The victory was Towson's second-straight five set win over the Seahawks. The six-straight wins mark the second-longest winning streak in series history after Towson reeled off 12 in a row at the start of its CAA membership over the Seahawks.
  • UNCW was paced by 20 kills from Maddy Kline, who added 11 digs for a double-double. Brynn Montgomery added a 39 assist, 14 dig double-double as well.
