Volleyball Drops CAA Home Match to Charleston

TOWSON, Md. -- It was a busy day for the Towson University women's volleyball team, which volunteered at the Autism Speaks Walk at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium Sunday morning before heading to SECU Arena for a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) match against the College of Charleston.

Unfortunately for Towson (9-12, 4-4 CAA), the Tigers fall in straight sets against the visiting Cougars 25-18, 25-16, 25-23.

Towson was paced by 11 kills from middle blocker Silvia Grassini, who finished with a .647 hitting percentage with 17 attempts and zero errors.

Defending conference champion Charleston (14-8, 5-3) was led by a match-high 17 kills from Devon Rachel, who took 39 swings. Kennedy Madison and Lauren Freed finished with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

How it Happened
  • The first set was tight and featured four ties and four lead changes through. Towson trailed 7-6 after a Grassini kill, but the Cougars scored a 6-1 run to increase to a 13-7 advantage. Towson could not pull back within four points of Charleston, which won the first set 25-18.
  • Early in the second set, Charleston jumped out on a 6-1 run. Towson struggled in the attack game and did not score back-to-back points until the Tigers' 13th and 14 points, both on kills from Emily Jarome.
  • The Cougars staved off any Tiger runs and took the second set 25-16.
  • The final set was tight throughout. After both sides tied at 5-5, Towson took a 7-6 lead. But the Cougars went on a 6-1 run to take a 12-8 lead.
  • Towson found itself down 16-11, but the Tigers rallied back to tie the third set 16-16, aided by back-to-back blocks from Grassini and a combination of Annie Ertz and Olivia Finckel.
  • Charleston went on a 3-1 run to retake a 20-17 lead. The Tigers pulled back within one to make it 23-22, but the Cougars scored two of the final three points to win the third set 25-23.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson improved its hitting percentage in each set, hitting for .186 in the first set before finishing the third with a .227. The Tigers hit for .209 in the match while Charleston swung at a .336 percent clip.
  • Grassini led Towson with her 11 kills while Jocelyn Kuilan finished with 10. Grassini finished with a match-high .647 hitting percentage, adding four block assists to her day.
  • Towson finished its second CAA match in three days with six total blocks. Charleston finished with five, led by Freed and Peyton Eisnaugle, who had three assisted blocks each.
  • Anna Holehouse finished the day with 17 digs, a match second-best. Charleston had a match-high 26 digs from McKala Rhodes while Rachel finished with 10.

  • Towson is on hiatus until Oct. 19 when the Tigers hit the road for five-straight road matches, including four CAA contests.
