WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Towson University field hockey team played a Sunday afternoon match against Georgetown on the road, ending in a 2-1 loss.
The Tigers move to 1-13 on the season while the Hoyas improve to 10-5.
How it Happened
- It was a slow start at Cooper Field as neither team had a shot until ___ minute. The Hoyas had a penalty corner in the ninth minute but did not capitalize off it, as the ball bounced around and ended in nothing.
- Both teams continued changing possession through the middle of the first period and Georgetown had two more penalty corner set us but still did not make it to the back of the net.
- In the 24th minute the road team got on the board on a goal from Jenna Florenzo off a rebounded shot by Katie McNeel to take the lead.
- With less than four minutes until the half the Hoyas tied it up on a shot from distance and took the 1-1 score into the locker room.
- The opening minutes of the second period starting similarly to the beginning of the game and both teams battled with possession.
- In the 46th minute the home team scored again, from a penalty corner set up, and took a 2-1 lead.
- Georgetown continued its offensive strike and took four consecutive penalty corners without a shot to break through the Tigers as the clock ticked toward the final 10 minutes.
- In the 64th Towson saw two different shot attempts from McNeel and Olivia Blasone but their attack was ended in a foul leading to a penalty corner for the road team.
- Abby Webster set up and input the corner but the Tigers were unable to get past the defenders at the net.
- Possession fluctuated through the final four minutes and several resets on the field ending in a loss for the Black and Gold.
Behind the Numbers
- Florenzo's goal was her first of the season.
- Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Peacock finished with four saves and two goals allowed.
- Towson again was well outnumbered in penalty corners as the home team had 15 and the Tigers had one.
- After struggling offensively the last three games, Towson had five shots for the first time since the Northeastern game on Sept. 30.
Looking Ahead
Towson will return home for a pair of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) games this weekend, hosting Delaware on Friday and Drexel on Sunday.
