TOWSON, Md. – The end of regulation was nearing and thoughts of overtime were beginning as No. 18 Delaware pulled away and scored a late goal to take a 2-1 win over the Towson University field hockey team on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers fall to 1-14 overall and 0-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) while the Blue Hens improve to 9-6 on the year and 4-0 in conference play.
How it Happened
- The early minutes of the game seemed to pass quickly but with little or no action as both teams turned the ball over and changed possession several times.
- At the 15 minute mark, the 0-0 score was broken by sophomore Abby Webster who scored her second goal of the season. Towson had four straight penalty corners and found a way to capitalize on the final one as senior Katie McNeel assisted on the goal.
- Another 15 minutes went by before the road team tied the game up, on a shot right in front of Tigers' goalkeeper Makenzie Peacock and to the right of the net.
- Entering halftime tied 1-1, Towson had four penalty corners to Delaware's seven and one shot as the Blue Hens had eight.
- The second period opened similarly, but the final 35 minutes were marked more by the six different penalty warnings given out. Three yellow cards, two to the Tigers one to Delaware, and three green cards all to the Blue Hens, kept both teams short on the field at one point.
- One foul just three minutes into the second half resulted in a penalty stroke for the Blue Hens and Peacock came up very strong knocking the ball down with her left glove and ending any chance of the penalty resulting in a goal.
- Even with the short staff, neither team saw the back of the net from the 30th minute until the 68th.
- Delaware's Pia Freudenberger scored from an open look in front of the net and sealed the win with just 1:49 to go.
Behind the Numbers
- Today's game was the 33rd meeting between the two teams and the Blue Hens now lead the series 28-7.
- Webster's goal in the first period is the first time since 2014 that Towson has scored before Delaware in this series.
- The result of today's game is also the first since the 2014 game that the final score had a one-point differential.
- Peacock finished the game with four total saves and two goals allowed while the Blue Hen's keeper, Lizzie Gaebel, finished with just one goal allowed and no saves.
- Delaware out-shot Towson just 8-1. The Blue Hens haven't scored less than three goals against the Tigers since 2014.
- Total penalty corners were four for the home team and seven for Delaware. This is the first game since 2011 (6) that the Blue Hens have had less than 10 corners against the Tigers.
Looking Ahead
Towson has just three remaining regular season games beginning on Sunday. The Tigers will host Drexel on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Johnny Unitas © Stadium.
