McNeel and Webster Score as Towson Falls to Drexel

TOWSON, Md. – Sunday's game ended in heartbreak as the Towson University field hockey team fell to Drexel at home, 3-2.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers came out strong, scoring in the third minute of the game off a penalty corner. Sophomore Beira Ho connected with senior Katie McNeel who scored and took the 1-0 lead.
  • Just three minutes later the home team scored again, this time by Abby Webster and assisted by McNeel. Webster tallied her third goal of the season following McNeel's seventh goal of the year.
  • Towson held out for the next eight minutes before the Dragons got on the board after a corner by Tess Bernheimer.
  • The Tigers took the 2-1 lead into the locker room and were leading shots 6-3 with three corners. Drexel had a corner advantage with four. As time ran out the Dragons were setting up for a corner and ended up taking two with 0:00 on the clock at the end of the first half
  • Momentum grew for the home team in the first period but the possession control in the opening minutes of the second was with the road team.
  • The Dragons ended the game with a total of 10 penalty corners to Towson's three and scored two more goals in the second period to take the win.
  • The possibility of overtime loomed as the score was tied 2-2 until the 65th minute. Drexel found a chance to take the lead, scoring on a corner and eventually winning the game.
  • The Tigers fall to 1-15 overall, 0-5 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play, while the Dragons improve to 8-8 on the year and 1-3 in conference.

Behind the Numbers
  • Today's 2-0 lead in the first period is the first time since 2011 Towson has had a two-goal lead against a CAA opponent.
  • McNeel has now surpassed her goal total from last year (six) now with seven for a career-high of season goals.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Peacock had a strong weekend, following the Delaware game on Friday she came out Sunday and grabbed two saves but also had a few deflections outside of the goal that kept chances low for Drexel.
  • Towson is mathematically eliminated from playing in the CAA tournament, as the conference brings four of the seven teams to the tournament each season. Delaware beat William & Mary to secure first place, the Tribe are in second followed by Northeastern in third and Hofstra in fourth.

From the Coach
"The lesson we took away from Friday is that we can play, and we can play well," said head coach E.A. Jackson. "Regardless of the win-loss record I think in terms of possession and generating attack our team proved to themselves that they can hang."

Looking Ahead
The Tigers have two games remaining in the 2018 season. They will travel to James Madison on Friday for a 6 p.m. game and then host Lehigh on Sunday at the new Towson field hockey field for Senior Day at 1 p.m.
