HARRISONBURG, Va. – In the pouring rain that never eased up the Towson University field hockey team faced James Madison in the final conference game on Friday night. Senior co-captain
Erika McKay scored her first goal of the season as the Tigers fell 3-1.
How it Happened
- The home team got on the board early, scoring a goal in the fifth minute to jump out ahead.
- Both teams struggled with possession as the rain made the ball slicker and several resets happened throughout the first period.
- Towson struggled offensively in the first 35 minutes, totaling just two shots including one on goal, while the Dukes had six at the half.
- In the opening minutes of the second period neither team found the back of the net but the Tigers came close on a shot from Katie McNeel that ripped into the goal area and was saved, a potential game-tying goal.
- JMU finally broke the silence of the second half and scored again in the 59th minute.
- Towson had three straight corners that started in the 60th minute, an opportunity for the road team to cut the lead, but did not see success getting through the defense.
- The Dukes responded drawing a corner themselves and scored on it with just under six minutes to play.
- McKay found an opening in the final 20 seconds of the game and crossed in front of the goalie to score and prevent a shutout, assisted by Jenna Florenzo.
Behind the Numbers
- McKay finished with one goal and one shot on goal, while McNeel recorded three shots with two on goal. Florenzo contributed her second assist of the season and freshman Kerri Thornton had a shot on goal.
- Freshman goalkeeper Ashliegh Bathras got the start tonight and grabbed three saves.
- JMU outshot the Tigers 12-6 and held a corner advantage 10-4.
