Volleyball Sweeps Delaware State in Nonconference Finale

DOVER, Del. -- Improving its attacks set by set, the Towson University women's volleyball swept Delaware State 3-0 Wednesday night in the Tigers' nonconference finale at Memorial Hall.

The Tigers (11-13) hit for .441 in the decided set as Towson won by set scores of 25-18, 25-10, 25-16. Jocelyn Kuilan went off for eight kills on 11 swings with zero errors to lead the Tigers with a .727 hitting percentage.

Delaware State (2-22) was led by seven kills from Sydney Armbrister, who also hit for .400 in the match. Jade Williams finished with a match-high 10 digs.

How it Happened
  • The two sides traded chances early in the first set, which featured nine ties and five lead changes.
  • With Delaware State leading 5-4, Towson ran off three-straight points to go up 7-5 before the Hornets called timeout.
  • The pause worked as Delaware State scored three unanswered points for an 8-7 lead. The Hornets built to their largest lead of the set at 11-8.
  • Towson rallied back with three unbroken points to tie the set at 11-11. After Delaware State took a 12-11 lead, Towson racked seven points in a row, six of which saw Silvia Grassini serve, to take an 18-12 lead. The Tigers finished off the set with a 5-2 run to secure the point 25-18.
  • In the second set, Delaware State score the first point, but the Tigers reeled off five in a row for a 5-1 lead. The Hornets did not score consecutive points until earning three in a row to make it 20-9 in favor of the Tigers. Towson scored four of the final five points of the second for a 25-10 win and a 2-0 set advantage.
  • Towson got off to a similar start in the third set, bursting out for an 8-1 lead. Another 5-0 run secured a 13-2 lead. As Towson went up 15-3, Delaware State scored five unanswered to trim the lead to 15-8.
  • After allowing three consecutive Delaware State points with a 17-12 lead, the Tigers did not allow another set of back-to-back points in the match to win the third 25-16.

  • Towson hit for .405 in the match, going .318 in the first, .435 in the second and .441 in the third.
  • The Tigers limited Delaware State to a hitting percentage of .075, including a negative team percentage in the second set.
  • Towson finished with seven blocks, including five assisted stops each from Olamide Sonuga and Olivia Finckel. Four other Tigers posted block assists as well.
  • Playing in her home state, rookie Emily Jarome dropped in three service aces while Kuilan and Silvia Grassini each landed one.
  • Anna Holehouse led Towson with seven digs while Jarome chipped in two of the Tigers' 26.
  • Kuilan played in all three sets, bringing her career sets played total to 458, which ranks fourth all-time in program history.
  • Towson improved to 9-0 all-time against the Hornets. The Tigers have won the last four meetings by 3-0 counts.
