Towson Block Party Leads Volleyball to Win at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Ending a five-match road swing, the Towson University women's volleyball team used a strong night at the net to collect a 3-1 win at UNCW Monday night at Hanover Hall in a crucial Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) match.

The Tigers (12-14, 6-6 CAA) completed the regular season sweep of the Seahawks behind a 25-23, 25-23, 25-27, 25-19 effort. Towson finished with 14 total blocks with seven players contributing. Silvia Grassini put away a match-best nine total blocks.

UNCW (13-9, 6-6 CAA) was held to a .131 hitting percentage in the match, in part because of the Towson blocks. Maddy Kline led the match with 16 kills while Halle Hunt finished with 10 for the Seahawks.

How it Happened
  • In the opening set, the two teams traded blows as there were three ties in the first eight serves before a 4-0 Towson run gave the Tigers an 8-4 edge. The Seahawks battled back to tie the first set 10-10 before wresting control with a 12-11 lead.
  • Towson surged again on a 5-1 run for a 16-13 lead before UNCW fought back to take a 20-19 lead late in the set. Towson trailed 22-21 before finishing the first set with a 4-1 run for a 25-23 win.
  • The second set began the same way the first did, featuring three ties early before UNCW worked out to a 7-3 lead. The hosts eventually took a 13-6, forcing a Towson timeout. Out of the pause, the Tigers went 4-2 run to cut the lead to 15-10, forcing a UNCW timeout. Following the Seahawk timeout, UNCW scored back-to-back points for a 17-10 lead. Down but not out, the Tigers rallied back on a 6-1 run with Grassini at the line to tie the match 17-17.
  • After UNCW halted the run, Towson again strung together multiple points for a 22-18 advantage. The Seahawks pulled back within one on a 4-1 run to make it 23-22 Towson but an untimely Seahawk service miscue and an Annie Ertz kill gave Towson the 25-23 set win.
  • Set three saw Towson jump out to an 11-6 lead but a long string of UNCW points pulled the hosts within one, 13-12 in favor of the Tigers. The teams traded shots before a 4-0 Seahawk run put UNCW up 18-17. UNCW went on a 6-0 run a few points later to get to set point, 24-19.
  • After a UNCW set-point service error Towson fought its way back into the set with Peyton Moyles on to put the ball in. Moyles and the Tigers went on a 5-0 tear to deadlock the third 24-24 before taking a 25-24 lead. Two straight Kline kills, followed by one from Kendall Bender put UNCW up for the set win 27-25.
  • With the fourth set tied 6-6, the Tigers went on a 4-1 run for a 10-7 lead. UNCW pulled back within one on back-to-back point before Towson scored three straight for a 13-9 advantage.
  • Towson extended its lead to 19-13 after a 4-0 run but the Seahawks kept the deciding set close with a 4-1 run to keep Towson's advantage at 22-19. The Tigers scored the final three points of the match, including the final pair with Moyles on serve for a 25-19 set win.
