Volleyball Clinches CAA Tournament Berth With Sweep

TOWSON, Md. -- Behind another outstanding night at the net, the Towson University women's volleyball team clinched a berth in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament thanks to a 3-0 sweep of visiting Elon.

The match was Towson's first at SECU Arena since Oct. 14 as the Tigers hit the road for five-straight tilts.

Towson (13-14, 7-6) secured the berth with set wins of 25-13, 25-21, 25-20 and 11 total blocks, adding to the 14 blocks from Monday night at UNCW. Six different Tigers contributed blocks in Towson's 11th-straight win over the Phoenix.

Elon (13-12, 4-9) was paced by eight kills from Kam Terry while Kodi Garcia led the Phoenix with 16 assists.

How it Happened
  • With the excitement of returning home, the Tigers raced out to a 7-2 lead in the first set, posting two 3-0 runs along the way. The Phoenix pulled back within two, 9-7 Towson, before another quick Tiger burst made it 12-7.
  • Later in the set, Towson doubled up on Elon for a 22-11 lead, featuring a 9-3 run. The Tigers scored three of the final four points, with a pair off the hand of Silvia Grassini for a 25-13 set win.
  • Set two was a tighter frame as Elon got its first lead of the match on a first-point service ace. The two teams tied five more times before the Tigers secured an 8-6 lead. With Towson sitting at 10-8, the Tigers reeled off eight unanswered points, fighting off an Elon timeout.
  • Elon kept it interesting in the middle of the second set as the Phoenix whittled Towson's lead down to 20-16 with a 7-1 run. Both sides traded chances before Towson locked in a 2-0 set lead with a 25-21 decision.
  • In the third set, Towson jumped out early out of the break for a 5-1 lead with Anna Holehouse on to serve. The Phoenix knocked down three in a row for a 5-4 Tiger lead, setting up another 5-0 Towson run.
  • Elon surged and took its second lead of the night behind an 8-1 run, going up 12-11. The Phoenix grabbed a two-point, 14-12 lead before the Tigers put up five points in the next eight serves.
  • The third set was tied once more at 17-17 before Towson won eight points on the following 11 chances for a 3-0 sweep and a 25-20 third-set decision.
