Kuilan’s Big Night Leads Volleyball Over Elon

TOWSON, Md. -- Behind a big night on offense from senior right sider Jocelyn Kuilan, the Towson University women's volleyball team got back on track with a 3-1 win over Elon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action thanks to a 25-18, 25-19, 21-25, 25-23 line.

The Tigers (7-11, 2-3 CAA) got 20 kills from Kuilan, who finished with a .429 hitting percentage in Towson's first-ever trip to the Schar Center, Elon's new volleyball and basketball facility. Marrisa Wonders cashed in 24-assist, 13-dig double-double.

Elon (8-7, 0-4 CAA) was led by 13 kills from Kam Terry while Kellyn Trowse dropped in 11 kills. The Phoenix hit for .140 in the match, boosted by a .226 percentage in the third set. The Tigers held Elon to a .069 percentage through the first two sets.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set behind two Kuilan kills and two Elon attack errors. Elon tied the set at 5-5 before the Tigers used small bursts to gain a 14-11 advantage.
  • An Annie Ertz block solo in the later stages of the set gave Towson a 20-16 advantage, setting up the set win behind a 4-0 run, capped on the 25th point by an Ertz and Silvia Grassini block.
  • The Phoenix swung for .000 in the opening frame as the Tigers finished with three block assists.
  • Set two was a tight affair early as the game was tied three times on the first 10 serves. With the set tied 11, Towson went on a small 4-1 run to wrest a 15-12 lead from the Phoenix, forcing an Elon timeout.
  • After the brief pause, Towson pulled away from Elon for a 20-16 lead after a Phoenix serving error, one of just five service errors for Elon on the night.
  • Towson finished off the Phoenix in the second set to take a two-game advantage thanks to a 5-3 run. Olamide Sonuga had set-winning point for the Tigers on a Wonders dish.
  • The Tigers found themselves out of rhythm in the middle of the third as Elon took an 18-14 lead. But the Tigers rallied back to deadlock the frame at 19. Unfortunately for the visiting side, Elon finished with a 6-2 run in the third to force game four.
  • Seeming to be the trend of the night, the early part of the fourth set was tight before the Tigers took an 8-5 lead. Elon pulled back within two in the middle portion of the fourth before the Tigers sat on match point, 24-21. Down but not out, the Phoenix fought off two match point chances before Towson sealed the win on an Emily Jarome kill.

Behind the Numbers
  • Kuilan finished with a match-high 20 kills, her first 20-kill match since dropping 25 on Fort Wayne on Sept. 15 last season.
  • Olivia Finckel was second with nine kills, but hit for .067. The junior made up for attack miscues with four total blocks Thursday night.
  • Wonders had her second double-double in as many matches and added to her season total with her fifth of the year, thanks to 24 assists and 13 digs. Peyton Moyles posted 13 assists as well.
  • Towson snapped a three-match losing streak and collected its first road CAA win of the season. The win was the Tigers' first true road game of the season in just their third such match.
  • The Tigers ran their winning streak over the Phoenix to 10, dating back to the 2004 campaign. Towson will go for its fifth-straight season sweep of Elon on Nov. 2 back at SECU Arena.

Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers continue their southern swing through the CAA with a Saturday night showdown at William & Mary.
  • First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Tribe's Kaplan Arena.
  • William & Mary holds a 4-8 overall mark and sits at 0-3 in the CAA. The Tribe host Delaware Friday night at 7 p.m.
