Volleyball Sweeps William & Mary to Cap Weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- After a dominant first set, the Towson University women's volleyball team continued its momentum into the ensuing games sweep host William & Mary Saturday night at Kaplan Arena during Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action.

The Tigers (8-11, 3-3 CAA) took the first set 25-10 before rallying back to grab the second game 25-22. Towson slammed the door on its ninth-straight win over the Tribe by a 25-17 count. For the match, Towson hit .352 with 41 kills on 88 swings.

William & Mary (4-9, 0-5 CAA) struggled on the attack, hitting just .073 for the match. Julia Brown led the Tribe with eight kills.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped out to an early lead in the opening set as an Anna Holehouse service ace made it 4-1 in favor of the Tigers.
  • The Tigers went on a 9-1 run with Annie Ertz on the line to build to a 19-5 lead. Rookie Emily Jarome dropped in two kills late in the stretch. Sitting on set point with a 24-9 lead, a Tiger service ace help William & Mary into double digits in the first frame but a Silvia Grassini kill capped the win 25-10.
  • In the ensuing game, William & Mary came out strong and grabbed a 6-3 lead. Towson fought back and knotted the action at 9-9 before surging past for a 16-13 lead, aided by a pair of Olamide Sonuga kills and a Jocelyn Kuilan service ace.
  • But the Tribe rallied back with five-straight points to snag an 18-16 lead. Down 21-19, Towson put together the final rally of the second set with a 6-1 run to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-22 set victory.
  • Again the Tigers took a quick lead, going up 5-3 in the first eight serves. William & Mary chipped away and wrested a one-point, 11-10 lead. Later in the set, Towson slammed the door on the match with a 6-1 run as Kuilan capped the sweep with a kill to finish the third 25-17.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson hit at a .352 percent clip for the match, bolstered by a .500 first set. The Tigers knocked down 13 kills on 22 swings in the opener while limiting William & Mary to a negative percentage in the first frame.
  • Jarome and Kuilan paced the match with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Jarome hit for .476 while Kuilan finished at .368.
  • The Tigers combined for 10 total blocks, all of which were assisted. Ertz led Towson with three block assists while Kuilan, Grassini and Sonuga had a pair apiece.
  • Marrisa Wonders kept Towson's offense clicking with 20 assists while Peyton Moyles posted 14 helpers. Wonders had just one error all night.
  • Brown led the Tribe with her eight kills while Claire Farrell had seven on 24 swings and five errors. William & Mary finished with four blocks, with Brown leading with a pair of assisted stops.
  • The Tigers dropped in seven perfect serves, including two from the hands of Wonders and Holehouse, who added nine digs to her stat line.
Up Next for Towson
  • Towson returns to SECU Arena next weekend for a pair of matches.
  • On Friday night, the Tigers host UNCW at 7 p.m.
  • Sunday will be a busy day for Towson as the Tigers will participate in the Autism Speaks Walk at Johnny Unitas Stadium, beginning at 9:15 a.m., followed by a noon match against defending CAA champion College of Charleston at noon.
