Tigers Sweep Northeastern in CAA Quarterfinals

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Towson University women's volleyball team avenged a pair of regular season losses against Northeastern, sweeping the Huskies 3-0 in the opening match of the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament.

Towson (17-14) battled the Huskies to get set wins of 25-23, 25-22, 25-23. Middle blocker Olamide Sonuga was a standout in the match, scoring 11 kills, including seven kills on her first seven swings. Anna Holehouse posted 26 digs in the three-setter.

Northeastern (16-14) was paced by nine kills from Athena Ardila. Samantha Shupe handed out 27 assists to lead the match.

Towson continues postseason play with a 1 p.m. showdown with top-seeded Hofstra Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. That match will also be played at the F. Mitchell Johnson Center.

How it Happened
  • The first set was tight early before the Tigers ripped off a 6-0 run to grab an 8-3 advantage. The Huskies logged a 10-2 run to grab a 13-10 lead on the Tigers.
  • Northeastern extended its lead out to 16-13. Towson whittled away at the Huskie lead and eventually surged past thanks to a 6-1 burst to control the set, 21-19. Towson reached set point, 24-20, but the Huskies battled back to make it a one-point set. But with Towson at set point, a service error cost Northeastern the frame as the Tigers won 25-23.
  • In the second set, it was Northeastern's turn to grab a quick lead as the Huskies went up 5-3. Northeastern eventually built to a 10-6 lead before the two sides traded points through the middle of the set.
  • Trailing 18-15, Towson rallied back to tie the set 18-18, but Northeastern scored a pair to take a 20-18 lead. Towson retied the match before Northeastern took a 22-20 lead. But those back-to-back points for the Huskies would be their last of the set as Towson reeled off five unanswered to win 25-22. The final three points of the second were scored on Kuilan kills.
  • Set three was tied four times in the first eight serves before Towson scored a pair to take a 6-4 advantage on a Kuilan service ace. Northeastern tied the set again at 6-6 before Towson surged away for a 12-8 lead and a Huskie timeout.
  • Both sides traded chances before Towson grabbed a 19-17 lead. Northeastern scored three straight for a 20-19 lead and a Towson timeout. Again both teams traded blows as Northeastern took a 23-22 advantage and looked to force a fourth set.
  • After a Huskie attack error tied the set 23-23, Peyton Moyles served the final two points of the match for Towson take the set 25-23. The penultimate point was an assisted block from Silvia Grassini and Annie Ertz before Northeastern slammed an attack attempt into the net for a Towson match point.

Behind the Numbers
  • For the match, Towson hit .214, including a sturdy .283 in the second set. Sonuga bolstered Towson's attack percentage with a .647. The senior middle blocker went 9-for-9 on kills to open the match.
  • Hot-blocking Towson continued its ways with another eight stuffs, led by four from Grassini and a trio from Sonuga and Ertz.
  • Snouga, Jarome and Kuilan all finished with 11 kills on the day. Kuilan added seven digs to her stat line as well as a one of the Tigers' five service aces.
  • Grassini and Holehouse accounted for two service aces apiece.
  • In the match, Kuilan became the program's all-time leader in career sets played as she has appeared in 484 sets during her time as a Towson Tiger.
  • Towson has now won six-straight matches, including back-to-back sweeps over Delaware and Northeastern in its last two matches.
  • Holehouse's 26 digs were a season-high in three-set matches for the program's all-time digs leader.

Next Up for Towson
  • Towson continues the 2018 CAA Women's Volleyball Tournament on Saturday against No. 1 Hofstra.
  • The Tigers and the Pride will square off for a 1 p.m. first serve at the College of Charleston's F. Mitchell Johnson Center.
  • Towson and Hofstra split the regular season matches. The Pride won in Towson 3-0 in late September before the Tigers went to Hempstead and collected a 3-2 win.
