Towson Travels to UMBC Tuesday

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team had two days off but returns to the court on Tuesday night at UMBC. The Tigers will make the short trip to Catonsville for the 7 p.m. matchup.
 
The Series: Towson Leads (38-14)
Tuesday will be the 53rd meeting between the two teams following last year's STEM Day game at SECU Arena. In 2017 the Tigers took a 95-64 win over the Retrievers and they have won the last seven meetings, the longest stretch of wins over UMBC in program history. Towson and UMBC first met in the 1976-77 season, when the Tigers set a program record for margin of victory with a 91-17 win.
 
Last Time Against UMBC
Last November, Towson hosted UMBC and had three players score in double digits to take the win, including Danielle Durjan and Nukiya Mayo. Mayo scored a then-career high 22 points while Durjan contributed 21]. The Tigers had a solid shooting night with 46.2 percent from the field, 40 percent from three and 84.4 percent from the free throw line. The Retrievers had 23 turnovers, which Towson scored 29 points from.
 
Scouting the Retrievers
UMBC is coming off a win after defeating Notre Dame (Md.) on Friday night, 81-43. Janee'a Summers leads the Retrievers with 15.2 points per game, while Te'yJah Oliver is averaging 9.5. Summers also leads the team in rebounds, averaging 6.3, and Paula Rubio leads in assists with 3.0 per game. UMBC enters the game 6-0, with wins over Kennesaw State and Coppin State.
 
Last Time Out
On Saturday night the Tigers took their second win over an Atlantic 10 opponent this season, over La Salle, 92-68. Towson's win was the first over the Explorers since the 1979-80 season as La Salle had won the last four meetings. Redshirt sophomore Kionna Jeter exploded in the second half with 25 points to score a season-high 32, three points shy of her career-high. Jeter also finished with a team-high five steals and two blocks, tied for the lead three assists with junior Nukiya Mayo, and grabbed eight rebounds. Mayo finished the night with her first double-double of the season, 22 points and 11 rebounds. Redshirt junior Q. Murray also scored in double figures with 13 points, her season best, four rebounds and two assists.
 
League Leaders
Through three games Kionna Jeter is averaging 24 points, leading the team and the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Towson is third in the conference in scoring with an average 73.8 points per game and fourth in scoring defense, allowing 61.4 points per game. The Tigers are also second in the league in rebounding, averaging 43.8 per game, and second in offensive boards with 15.8. With 4.6 blocked shots per game Towson in second, behind James Madison. Jeter is in the top-10 individual stats for rebounds (10th), field goal percentage (7th), free throw percentage (6th) and leads the conference in steals with 4.5 per game. Freshman Janeen Camp continues to lead the team in blocked shots, she is second in the conference while senior Maia Lee is fifth.
 
On the Road Again
Tuesday's trip to UMBC is the first of four road games for the Tigers who have seven road games remaining in the nonconference schedule. Towson will play in SECU Arena just once more in 2018, on Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. against Loyola (Md.) for the annual STEM Day game.

Towson will have three days off following Tuesday's game before traveling to Mount St. Mary's for a Saturday afternoon game following the holiday, tipping off at 1 p.m.
