TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team continues its four-game road stretch this weekend with a matchup at Mount St. Mary's on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Tigers enter the weekend 3-1 after three straight wins including a Tuesday victory over UMBC. The Mountaineers are currently 1-3 after falling to Rider last weekend.
The Series: Mount St. Mary's Leads (13-11)
Saturday's game will be the 25th meeting between the two teams as Mount St. Mary's leads with 13 wins. The first matchup took place in the 1976-77 season and was a Towson win, 58-52. The Tigers and Mountaineers haven't met since 2011 when Towson took a win on the road. Mount St. Mary's last win in the series was in 2004 in Towson, an 84-57 victory.
Scouting the Mountaineers
Mount St. Mary's has four players averaging at least 10 points per game, but has only taken one win this season, against Washington College in the season opener. Rebecca Lee leads the team in rebounds, averaging 7.8 per game, while Juliette Lawless leads the team in points averaging 13.3 and assists with three per game.
Scouting the Tigers
Towson's last two games saw three players score in double digits on the way to two necessary wins. Leading the offense is redshirt sophomore
Kionna Jeter, averaging 24 points per game, followed by
Nukiya Mayo with 12.3 per game and
Jalynn Holmes with 11.3. Jeter also leads the team in steals with 16 total, four per game, and rebounds with 27 total, 6.7 per game.
Q. Murray has been filling into her role as a guard and leads the team in assists with 3.5 per game and is averaging 6.8 points along the way.
Last Time Out
The Tigers are coming off a comeback win over Baltimore rival UMBC on Tuesday night. Through the first half the Retrievers held an advantage as the road team climbed back within one point to enter halftime. At the half,
Kionna Jeter had just six points, she would end the night with 24 as she led the team to victory once again.
Jalynn Holmes also finished in double figures with 12 points and
Danielle Durjan came off the bench with 13 points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist.
Controlling the CAA
As a team Towson is third in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in scoring and rebounding, averaging 73.3 points per game and 45 rebounds per game.
Kionna Jeter continues to lead the league in scoring with her 24-point average, and in steals with four per game.
Nukiya Mayo is currently seventh in the conference in rebounding as she averages seven per game, Jeter is 10th with an average of 6.8. Jeter is also third in the CAA in field goal percentage and seven in free throw percentage. Freshman
Janeen Camp is second in blocked shots averaging two per game, with
Maia Lee also in the top-10 of blocked shots.
Ryan Holder is sixth in the CAA in steals with two per game, and
Q. Murray is 10th in the league in assists with 3.5 per game.
NCAA Leaderboard Appearances
Four games in and the Tigers have two names on NCAA Leaderboards in at least the top-50.
Kionna Jeter is eighth in the nation in total steals, 12th in steals per game, 13th in points per game, 15th in field goals made and 20th in field goals attempted.
Janeen Camp is currently 49th nationally in total blocked shots, she is 57th in blocks per game. As a team Towson is 18th in offensive rebounds per game, only 30 teams are ranked in this category.
Travelin' Tigers
After Saturday's game the Tigers will take one more day-trip, to George Washington, next Tuesday, before going on a hike to Syracuse, N.Y. to face the Orange on Sunday, Dec. 2.
