Tigers Host UMass in Home Opener

TOWSON, Md. – Sunday brings the 2018-19 home opener for the Towson University women's basketball team. The Tigers host the University of Massachusetts in a 2 p.m. tipoff at SECU Arena.
 
Scouting the Tigers
The first game of the season brought action for six of Towson's newcomers, the three transfers and three members of the freshman class touched the floor Tuesday. Redshirt sophomore Kionna Jeter had a strong night with a team-high 13 points, while tied for the lead in assists with three and rebounds with six. Freshman Janeen Camp also has six rebounds while redshirt junior Q. Murray contributed three assists. Jeter is 11th in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with her 13 points and ranks ninth in the conference, along with Camp, in rebounds. Sophomore Jalynn Holmes scored 12 points on the opening night and is 12th in the CAA in scoring, second on the team.
 
Last Time Out
Towson enters Sunday's contest 0-1 after falling to Wake Forest on the road. The Tigers outscored the Demon Deacons in both the third and fourth quarters but could not close out the win. With less than two minutes remaining in the game the road team was within four points of tying it up. Jeter and Holmes combined for 25 of Towson's 53 points.
 
Last Time Against UMass
In 2017 the Tigers traveled to Amherst, Massachusetts to take on the Minutewomen and fell 72-49. Seven members of this year's squad played in last season's matchup, led by Nukiya Mayo, who scored 19 points in 27 minutes. Danielle Durjan and Jalynn Holmes scored six points each but the home team held an advantage in each quarter to seal the win.
 
Scouting the Minutewomen
UMass comes to Maryland with a 1-0 record after defeating Sacred Heart on Tuesday. The Minutewomen were led by Bre Hampton-Bey who scored 19 points while Destiney Philoxy dropped 16 off the bench, Hailey Leidel scored 13 and Anil Soysal 11. Jessica George leads the team in assists with seven while Hampton-Bey and Leidel both have seven rebounds apiece.
 
The Series: UMass Leads 1-0
Last year was the first meeting between Towson and UMass, as the Minutewomen hold a 1-0 series lead this Sunday the Tigers have a chance to even the record.
 
The Road Ahead
Following Sunday's game, Towson will have just one more home game until Dec. 4. Next weekend the Tigers host La Salle before opening a four-game road stretch. Towson will play three local schools in UMBC, Mount St. Mary's and George Washington before a longer road trip to Syracuse on Dec. 2.
