Towson Begins CAA Play With Trip To Elon

TOWSON, Md. – It's time to get excited because Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball competition begins this weekend when Towson visits Elon.

Opening Tip
  • This is the fourth time in the last five years, Towson will open its CAA schedule on the road.
  • Towson won at William & Mary (76-69 to begin the 2015-16 CAA season) and lost at James Madison (61-52 to begin the 2014-15 season) and Charleston (73-62 to start the 2017-18 season).
  • Five of Towson's last six games have been decided by six points or less.
  • Elon has won three of the last four meetings, including both last season.
  • Towson has lost in its last two trips to Elon.
  • This will be the first CAA game in Elon's new Schar Center.
  • Towson has scored at least 30 points in the paint in three of its last four games.

Tigers Featured On CAA Broadcast Package
  • For the second consecutive season, 12 CAA men's basketball conference games will be televised by CBS Sports Digital on CollegeSportsLive.com.
  • Towson University men's basketball will be featured twice on the schedule for its home contests on Jan. 24 against Northeastern and Feb. 28 versus William & Mary inside of SECU Arena. 
  • All 10 CAA teams will have at least two contests on the "Game of the Week" package, with Charleston, Hofstra, Northeastern and William and Mary making three appearances.
 
Towson Update
  • Brian Fobbs leads the Tigers in scoring (15.9 points) per game.
  • Fobbs is ninth in the CAA in scoring, 11th in 3-pointers made per game (2.3) and 12th in rebounding (5.8).
  • Fobbs recorded his first career double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) in a 73-55 win over Tulane.
  • Dennis Tunstall had 14 rebounds against La Salle in a 57-51 loss.
  • Tunstall is fifth in the CAA in rebounding (8.4) and eighth in blocked shots (0.8).
  • Tobias Howard is 11th in the CAA in assists (2.9) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.0).
  • Howard is also 14th in steals per game (1.0).
  • Alex Thomas is ninth in the CAA in blocked shots (0.7).
  • Jakigh Dottin is coming off a career best 12 point performance against La Salle.
  • Solomon Uyaelunmo had nine points and nine rebounds against Tulane.
  • The Tigers lead the CAA in rebounding margin (+6.6).
 
Dynamic Defense
  • Towson held Tulane (55 points) and La Salle (57) below 60 points in the Atlantic City tournament.
  • It was the first time since the 2015-16 season that Towson has held Division I opponents below 60 points in consecutive games. Towson beat Drexel 69-50 on Jan. 16, 2016 and lost to College of Charleston, 40-37 on Jan. 21, 2016, a span of 88 games.
  • Towson limited La Salle to 29.8 percent in its 57-51 loss.
  • Towson is 11-2 when holding teams below 30 percent shooting (7-2 against Division I opponents) under head coach Pat Skerry.
  • The loss to La Salle was the first since a 46-40 setback to Georgetown on Dec. 12, 2012 in which Towson held an opponent below 30 percent shooting and lost.
  • That ended a 10-game winning streak (7 against Division I opponents) when holding an opponent below 30 percent shooting.
 
A Look At Elon
  • Elon' has defeated Manhattan (62-56), Milligan (98-71), Central Penn (92-59) and Kennesaw State (76-67) this season.
  • Elon has been paced by a balanced scoring attack with three players averaging double figures: Steven Santa Ana (16.3 ppg., 6.5 rpg), Tyler Seibring (15.8) and Sheldon Eberhardt (10.3).
  • Elon averages 10.6 made 3-pointers per game, which lead the conference.
  • Steven Santa Ana and Tyler Seibring have combined for 62 3-pointers. Towson has 66 as a team.
  • Santa Ana is third in 3-point shooting percentage (42.9), fifth in field goal percentage (52.0), fifth in the CAA in 3-pointers made per game (2.5) and seventh in scoring.
  • Seibring is sixth in the CAA in 3-pointers made per game (2.5) and 10th in scoring and field goal percentage (49.0).
  • Eberhardt is fifth in the CAA in steals (1.8) and seventh in steals (2.5).
  • Freshman guard Kris Wooten was named CAA Rookie Of The Week after scoring10 points off the bench at Kennesaw State and averaging 11.5 points over the two games, which included scoring a season-high 13 points in a first-career start at UMKC.
  • Also reaching double digits in the 95-59 loss at UMKC were Nathan Priddy (11 points) and Federico Poser (10 points). Both Poser and Andy Pack each grabbed a team-best five rebounds, while Priddy dished out a team-high three assists.
 
Perfection When It Comes to Graduation
  • Towson has a perfect men's basketball graduation rate under head coach Pat Skerry.
  • The Tigers are 21-for-21.
 
Towson In the Community
  • Towson is the Division I national champion of the NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Competition for the Fall 2018 semester. Towson completed the most community service hours among all schools in the competition, including 75 different Division I departments and approximately 300 total programs across the country.
  • The Towson men's basketball team has been active in the community since returning to campus in August. Members of the team spoke at Loch Raven Academy, participated in Towson West Elementary School's Back To School Night and the Autism Speaks Walk.
  • In addition to the athletic and academic success, the Tigers ranked first nationally in Division I men's team sports for their community service activities in the 2017 NCAA Team Works Helper Helper Community Service Competition.
 
Coaches Powering Forward
  • Autism Speaks Coaches Powering Forward will take place on the weekend of February 15-17, 2019.
  • The Tigers host Drexel on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.
  • Last season, more than 375 NCAA coaches participated by wearing an Autism Speaks blue puzzle piece lapel pin to help increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism.
  • In total, more than 4,400 pins were worn by coaching staff, officials, broadcasters, and school teams.
  • Autism currently affects one in every 59 children in the U.S and for most, is a lifelong condition.

Towson finishes its weekend road trip at William & Mary on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 4 p.m. Following Sunday's game, the Tigers start a three-game homestand against the College of Charleston (Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.), UNCW (Saturday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m.) and Cornell (Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.).
